Gupta (25), against whom the death warrant has been issued for execution along with three other condemned prisoners on March 3, has filed the curative plea saying that the death penalty should not awarded to him, his counsel A P Singh said. He is the lone convict among the four who has not exhausted his legal remedies of filing a curative petition and subsequent mercy plea with the President. an hour ago
Business / Business Standard/ General News
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that there was no discussion on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) or the NRC at the Eastern Zonal Council (EZC) meeting here, but she raised the issue of violence in Delhi. Banerjee expressed concern over the communal clashes in Delhi that have claimed at least 39 lives and said that steps should be taken so that the situation doesn't aggravate further. "I am very sad about what happened in Delhi. A police constable and an IB official also died. Peace must be restored in Delhi," she told the meeting. Speaking to reporters after attending a lunch hosted by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Banerjee said there was no discussion on the CAA or NRC at the meeting as it was not on the agenda. "Neither they raised the issues nor did I. It was also not on the agenda. This meeting was not for that," she said. HC stays proceedings against Kejriwal, others in defamation case by BJP leader

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The Delhi High Court Friday stayed proceedings in a defamation case against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP leaders for their remarks over alleged deletion of voters' names from electoral rolls in the national capital. Justice Anu Malhotra, while staying the proceedings in the trial court, issued notice to the Delhi government and BJP leader Rajeev Babbar, who moved the defamation complaint on behalf of the party's Delhi unit, seeking their responses by April 23. Kejriwal and three others -- Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Gupta and party leaders Manoj Kumar and Atishi Marlena -- have challenged a sessions court order which upheld a magisterial court's decision to summon them as accused in the complaint. They have sought quashing of the magisterial court's March 15, 2019 and sessions court's January 28 this year orders. Babbar, in his complaint, has sought proceedings against them for "harming" the reputation of BJP by blaming it for the deletion of ...

Maha Council clears bill to bar direct election of mayors

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Maharashtra Legislative Council on Friday cleared the bill that seeks to bar direct election of mayor and municipal council chairperson from among the people. State Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde tabled the bill to amend the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships Act. "The earlier provision was creation of wards of multiple candidates as well as direct election of mayor or municipal council chairperson. We want to remove it and bring an amendment, which will enable election as per the 'one ward-one corporator' policy," Shinde said. The BJP, however, opposed the bill. Leader of Opposition Pravin Darekar said, "This amendment is unjust to workers of parties and people. If this decision is taken, it will end up in horse-trading. The amendment will now lead to elected representatives selecting mayor and municipal council chairperson among themselves." "Our government had empowered the people to elect mayor or municipal council .....

National Science Day: Students bring power to Maha school

Business / Business Standard/ General News
A science project by four students with help from teachers on Friday brought electricity to a school in Maharashtra's Beed district after nearly a year, coinciding with National Science Day. The television set as well as loudspeakers at the Zilla Parishad school in Beed's Kurla area were lying unused after power supply was disconnected a year ago, and students were asked to work on the windmill and solar panel project to overcome this, science class teacher Bahusaheb Rane told PTI. "Power supply was disconnected after a bill of Rs 20,000 was pending, and remains unpaid even today. So we asked students to work on a wind and solar power generation project. The LED TV set and loudspeakers were used on Friday after almost a year," a proud Rane narrated. He said the material, costing Rs 5,000 which was paid by teachers, was sourced from scrap. "We looked up online but the solutions were costly. The windmill was made from items bought from scrap dealers. The project took a week..

However, apart from the PCPIR in Dahej, the other PCPIRs were yet to take off as envisaged. 4G tablet row: Guj govt slams Cong for misleading claims

Business / Business Standard/ General News
A day after the Congress accused it of buying 4G tablets at an inflated price, the Gujarat government on Friday claimed that the opposition was citing the price of touchscreens and not tablets available on e-commerce portals. Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani on Thursday had claimed that the same tablet, with 4G calling facility and seven inch screen, was available for Rs 1,400 apiece on an e- commerce portal. Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama on Friday showed two screenshots of the website and informed the House that Dhanani mistook the advertisement for a 7-inch touchscreen as that for an entire tablet. "As you can see, Rs 1,400 is for the replacement touchscreen of that 7-inch tablet. The price for the whole tablet is mentioned as USD 99, that comes to around Rs 7,000. Dhanani must take back his allegations or tender an apology here," Chudasama said. The government had told the Assembly that it was purchasing 4G calling tablets at Rs 6,667 a piece for .....

The petition by Ajay Gautam has urged the court to direct the Centre to order the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to find out the "anti-national forces" behind the agitations and to probe the role of People's Front of India (PFI) which is allegedly "funding, motivating and supporting the protests". India on Friday pulled out of the upcoming shooting World Cup in Cyprus, citing the novel coronavirus threat there.
