India is new Chair of poll management bodies of South Asia

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on Friday took over as the new Chair of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) for the year 2020 at the annual meeting of poll management bodies of the SAARC countries. Pakistan was not invited to the event due to strain in bilateral ties following India's decision on Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials. Taking over the Chair from Bangladesh, Arora said that in a democracy, power is won and legitimised only by regular elections, based on the universal, equal, direct and freely expressed suffrage. Strong participatory and inclusive democracies are better able to ensure good governance and empowerment of all the citizens, he said. The Election Commission also signed an agreement with the Independent National Electoral Commission of Afghanistan for cooperation in the field of election management on the sidelines of the international conference on 'Strengthening Institutional Capacity' on Friday. Lakshya Sen shines, gives Chennai Superstarz early advantage

Business / Business Standard/ General News
: Young Lakshya Sen dominated Brice Leverdez to post a 15-5, 15-4 win, thereby handing Chennai Superstarz a 3-2 points advantage after three matches in a Premier Badminton League (PBL) tie here on Friday. Earlier, Peng Soon Chan and Eom Hye Won won the mixed doubles, a trump match for the team to give Raptors a headstart. The duo beat Chennai's Dhruv Kapilla and Jessica Pugh 15 -7, 15-8 before Tommy Sugiarto quelled a mid-match challenge from B Sai Praneeth 15-13, 10-15, 15-11 to pull one back for the home team. Sen got off to a quick start and never allowed the French right-hander to get a foothold. The 2018 Junior Asian Championships gold medallist displayed exceptional temperament and anticipation skills to blow away the 38th ranked Frenchman. Sai Praneeth and Sugiarto played twice last year on the BWF World Tour with both matches ending in favour of the Indian. When the match PBL began, it was, however, Sugiarto who made the better start of the two. The Chennai ace ....

Arbitrary or excessive tax results in "social injustice" by a government:CJI

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Chief Justice of India S A Bobde on Friday said arbitrary or excessive tax results in "social injustice" by a government, adding tax should be collected from people like honey bee draws nectar from flowers without harming it. Justice Bobe, whose comments came just a week ahead of the General Budget, also made a case for speedy resolution of tax disputes, saying it will act as an incentive for tax payers and free the funds locked in litigation. "While tax evasion is a social injustice to the fellow citizens, arbitrary or excessive tax also results in social injustice by a government," the CJI said at the 79th foundation day celebrations of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. "Tax should be collected from people like honey bee draws nectar from flowers without harming it," he said and referred to ancient taxation laws in India. The CJI said tax judiciary plays a very important role in resource mobilisation of the country and expressed concern over pendency of cases. "A just and speedy .....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Maharashtra revenue minister and state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat on Friday hit out at the Centre for reportedly withdrawing the security of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar. The NCP, earlier in the day, accused the Central government of withdrawing Pawar's security at his official residence in New Delhi. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here, Thorat said, "Pawar is among the senior national leaders in the country and it is the duty of the government to protect and take due care of such leaders." "If his security is being withdrawn in such a manner, then it is really wrong," he added. Thorat also attacked the BJP over the phone tapping row, adding that the ruling party at the Centre was making efforts to jeopardise the basic principles of the Constitution and snooping in this manner was one of them. Accusing the previous BJP-led Maharashtra government of tapping phones of senior NCP and Congress leaders during the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, state..
