Russia bans Chinese citizens over virus concerns: agencies

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Russia on Tuesday said it would ban all Chinese citizens from entering its territory from February 20, in a drastic measure against the spread of the new coronavirus, local news agencies said. "The entry of all Chinese citizens via Russia's state frontiers will be suspended from February 20 for work travel, private travel, study and tourism," said Deputy Prime Minister in charge of health, Tatiana Golikova, according to agencies. She said the decision was taken "because of the worsening of the epidemic in China and the fact that Chinese nationals are continuing to arrive on Russian territory." Several Chinese nationals visit Russia as tourists or live there for work or study and many transit through Russian airports en route to the West. Russia has taken drastic measures to stop the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak which has claimed nearly 1,900 lives in China and around the world. It has already closed its 4,250-km (2,650-mile) border with China. There are no more coronavirus cases in..

Putin sacks top adviser and ex-Ukraine pointman

Business / Business Standard/ General News
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday sacked Vladislav Surkov, one of his chief advisers and the architect of Russia's Ukraine policy who was viewed among the country's most powerful men. The dismissal of the 55-year-old Surkin was announced on the Kremlin website but there was no indication of what his new job would be. In recent years, Surkov was in charge of the Kremlin's Ukraine policy and cultivated close ties with the separatists who have carved out "people's republics" in the ex-Soviet country's eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. He was replaced earlier this month as the Kremlin's chief ideologue and pointman on relations with Ukraine and Moscow-backed separatists by Dmitry Kozak, a 61-year-old veteran official and a close ally of Putin. As first deputy head of the Kremlin administration, Surkov helped transform Russian parliament into a rubber stamp, muzzle media and neuter the opposition. The secretive strategist oversaw political parties in parliament and electoral .....

Afghan president wins vote, opponent says he's the winner

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Ashraf Ghani won a second term as president of Afghanistan, the country's independent election commission announced Tuesday, but his closest opponent refused to recognize the results, declaring himself winner and potentially endangering peace negotiations with the Taliban. The Taliban also rejected Ghani's win, further putting into question a US peace plan that calls for a reduction in violence followed by a more permanent agreement expected to be signed Feb. 29, between Washington and the Taliban. That agreement would pave the way for U.S. troops to return home, ending America's longest war, and trigger negotiations between Afghans on both sides of the conflict. The bickering in Kabul and Ghani's surprise suggestion that the Taliban participate in elections would seem to throw a wrench into peace plans announced last weekend at the Munich Security Summit. Theelection commission said Ghani garnered 923,592 votes, or 50.64%, in the troubled election that took place last Sept. 28. The ....

Israeli military to create command to combat Iran threats

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Israel's military will set up a special branch in its general staff dedicated to threats from Iran, it said Tuesday. The military said it will appoint a major general to head the command, which is part of a broader restructuring in the general staff. A statement by the military offered few details about the new command, saying the nature of the new branch's work was yet to be determined. But the move highlights the importance Israel places on the threats it views coming from Iran. Iran has forces based in Syria, Israel's northern neighbor, and supports Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. In Gaza, it supplies Islamic Jihad with cash, weapons and training, and also supports Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules the coastal territory. Israel also accuses Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons a charge Iran denies. Israel has repeatedly struck Iran-linked targets in Syria in recent years and has warned against any permanent Iranian presence on the frontier. But its battle against ....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
A day after Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said the CBI has cleared the names of six government officials in the 2017 postgraduate medical admission scam, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi on Tuesday said her office is here to keep breaking nexuses and improving the system. She also criticised the Narayanasamy for not disclosing the names of the officials. Bedi said that her office "is here to keep breaking nexuses and improving the systems wherever required in a transformative way and it is her duty to do it". "Even if the supervising officers of the day are not not being held criminally culpable the question remains as to who were overseeing the medical colleges and whose responsibility it was to see that the students got fair play," Bedi told reporters. The Lt governor said she also wanted to know how the medical colleges "could do all the extortion (of fees) which was persisting". 3 hours ago
Business / Business Standard/ General News
India will send a C-17 military transport aircraft to the Chinese city of Wuhan on Thursday to evacuate more Indians and deliver a consignment of medical supplies to China's coronavirus-hit people, official sources said. The C-17 Globemaster is the largest military aircraft in the Indian Air Force's inventory. The plane can carry large combat equipment, troops and humanitarian aid across long distances in all weather conditions. The sources told PTI that the aircraft will carry a large consignment of medical supplies to China and bring back more Indians from Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus epidemic. India's national carrier Air India has already evacuated around 640 Indians from Wuhan in two separate flights. US border clampdown forces Venezuelan teen into Mexico alone

Business / Business Standard/ General News
A Venezuelan teenager has been forced back to Mexico by US government authorities who denied her claims that she was fleeing political repression and violence, even after they accepted the same claims from her father. The teenager, who is being identified by only her first name, Branyerly, is living alone in Matamoros, Mexico, across from Brownsville. U.S. border agents on Monday denied her request not to be sent back under the Trump administration's so-called Remain in Mexico program for migrants. Branyerly and her father could not request asylum under another Trump policy, a ban on most asylum claims at the southern border for people who came through a third country. But in January, an immigration judge allowed her father, Branly, into the U.S. by granting what's called withholding of removal, which requires meeting a higher legal standard. That same judge denied withholding for Branyerly, who was 17 when she originally arrived at the border. Both she and her father say the judge .....

Misguided virus fears hitting Asian American businesses

Business / Business Standard/ General News
In Arizona, a burgeoning Asian American community fields xenophobic calls about a planned night market featuring Asian street foods. In New York, a dim sum restaurant owner worries he won't make rent. In the San Francisco Bay Area, a local Asian American-owned restaurant chain is mulling temporarily shuttering one of its properties because of the downturn in trade. In major U.S. cities, Asian American businesses are seeing a remarkable decline in customers as fear about the viral outbreak from China spreads. City and health officials are trying to staunch the financial bleeding through information campaigns and personal visits to shops and restaurants, emphasizing that, with just 15 cases diagnosed in the entire country, there is no reason to avoid them. Business owners, some of whom have seen their customer traffic cut by more than half, are anxiously waiting for things to return to normal. Mesa, Arizona's freshly crowned Asian District was deep into organizing its night market when ...

SpaceX aims to launch up to 4 tourists into super high orbit

Business / Business Standard/ General News
SpaceX aims to launch up to four tourists into a super high orbit, possibly by the end of next year. The private company is working with Space Adventures Inc. for the flight, officials announced Tuesday. Ticket prices are not being divulged but expected to be in the millions. Space Adventures already has helped put tourists into orbit with trips to the International Space Station, working with the Russian space program. For this trip, paying customers will skip the space station and instead orbit two to three times higher, or roughly 500 miles to 750 miles (800 kilometers to 1,200 kilometers) above Earth. It's a lofty goal that would approach the record 850-mile-high (1,370 kilometers) orbit achieved by Gemini 11's Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon in 1966. The tourist flight will forge a path to making spaceflight possible for all people who dream of it, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in a statement. Elon Musk's California-based SpaceX already is dabbling in space tourism, signing ....

MIT to caption online videos after discrimination lawsuit

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has agreed to provide captions for more of its publicly available online videos as part of a settlement announced Tuesday in a case that accused the school of discriminating against people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The settlement comes months after a similar deal was reached in a lawsuit brought against Harvard University by the National Association of the Deaf, which said the schools were discriminating against people with hearing disabilities by not adequately or accurately captioning videos of lectures and other programs it posts online. Why would you not make your content accessible to everyone?" said Howard Rosenblum, CEO of the association. We want to make sure that moving forward all the universities and colleges make themselves aware. The lawsuits brought against MIT and Harvard in 2015 said people who were deaf or hard or hearing couldn't benefit from the schools' wealth of online educational resources because they had .....

The blast on the India-Pakistan train took place near Panipat in Haryana on February 18, 2007, when it was on its way to Attari in Amritsar, the last station on the Indian side. The elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and 107 other civic bodies of West Bengal are likely to be held in mid April, official sources said. The state government is keen on holding the elections between April 12-26, they said. "The suggested dates for KMC elections is April 12 whereas the date for elections to 107 other municipalities across the state is April 26. Nothing has been finalised but discussions are on over completing the election process by April," a senior official said. Suggestions have been made that elections for Bidhanagar and Durgapur municipal corporations be held after October, he said. These elections are being tipped as "mini assembly polls" ahead of the crucial 2021 assembly polls in West Bengal.
