Maharashtra Assembly Polls: South Mumbai rolls eyes at elections

While they recognise the importance of casting their vote on October 21, South Mumbai residents feel they have little to look forward to. In Colaba, the nuisance of hawkers and the lack of parking space has affected shop owners, pedestrians and residents. Nadi Atiramani, the owner of a garment store, says, "The hawkers block access to our shops. We have complained to the BMC time and again but the problem persists." For over a decade, residents of Bhuleshwar have similarly continued their fight against jewellery workshops in their area. Although, political leaders had intervened, they continue to suffer from asthma, bronchitis and restrictive lung disease due to toxic fumes from factory chimneys. Vijay Shah, treasurer of the Bhuleshwar Residents Association, says, "We had approached corporators but they are all hand-in-glove with the jewellers. Emoji-nal Atyachar

News / Mid-Day/ News
Recently, a friend had a little digital contretemps, yaniki khit-pit with "a young lover" (henceforth YL) of his. YL felt my friend had sent him a fake smile emoji in response to a sweet nothing. Things plummeted from there through a prolonged air of injury, into silence. "But there is no such thing as a fake smile!" I exclaimed. "This is considered to be a fake smile," said my friend showing me the troublesome emoji. "That is a restrained smiley," I said. In fact, I use the restrained smiley often, and had recently had my own digital drama with it. I had been sending various restrained smileys in a professional whatsapp conversation, without my glasses on. At some point—that point called "hey bhagwan, too late"—I realised that I had, in fact, been sending the restrained winking smiley—the one that has a winking eye but does not have its tongue out. It was too embarrassing to say anything so I just loftily continued the chat as if nothing has happened. I do like the r..

IMF chief says building 'peer pressure' to follow trade rules

Business / Business Standard/ General News
With trade tensions undermining confidence and global growth, economic leaders are increasingly pushing each other to fix the shortcomings behind the disputes, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said Saturday. Trade is typically an engine of economic growth but with the United States and China engulfed in massive tariff battle and Britain's divorce from the European Union still not settled and a month-end deadline fast approaching, growth in international commerce has come to a virtual standstill, Georgieva said. "We need to look into what are the reasons we are not making more progress on trade and they are not just the relations between US and China," Georgieva told reporters. Among finance officials gathered for the International Monetary Fund annual meeting, there was an understanding on "what are the issues that need to be addressed and building more, if you wish, peer pressure for everybody to play by the trade rule book." In addition, countries must "be willing to expand and .....

German Ambassador to India discusses diplomacy through red car, humour

Walter J Lindner won't do anything conventional. "Interviews at posh lounges get boring. So, I thought, we could meet here, the place Gregory Roberts immortalised in Shantaram," he says right after cutting through the crowd, a towering lean man in his 60s. The monsoon has finally withdrawn. We think we are going to soften the October heat with a cola. Just then, the temperature drops and the sky opens up when it isn't supposed to. Moving on from his last position as State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office, Lindner took charge in India this April. His connection with the country, he traces back 42 years. It was at a concert in New York where Ravi Shankar had taken stage where he grew mesmerised with India. "I was only 22 and a new graduate. Like most youngsters, I was in search of spirituality. It had affected many people in the building, some very badly. She couldn't believe that an institution of such comfort to so many, could have overnight become a fortress of such cold indifference to those same people. Sushil Kumar, 'Jhaadiya' to his buddies (because of his thin wiry frame), a 3rd floor resident, just hadn't woken up this morning. It had been an incredibly bad run of luck for Jhaadiya—two years ago, DeMo had hurt jewellers—that was the first nail in his coffin. Jhaadiya got even thinner with the stress. But this one, and the restrictions on withdrawals was the final nail. Vendors and suppliers were circling like vultures. The second 'building heart attack', Carvalho uncle, from the sixth floor, was a tad luckier. He was on his way to the branch, hoping he could get them to unfreeze some money, he'd collapsed in the queue of protesters outside. She and Ishant had fixed this Diwali as their wedding day—he'd joked that they'd name their first born Diya. B..

Bombay Rose by Gitanjali Rao, animation feature, BambaiyyaBombay flower sellers Salim and Kamala are in love; multiple characters are connected by a red rose, including the feisty, bisexual Shirley. Nagpur: When the BJP went solo in the last Assembly polls, it struck gold by winning 26 of the 32 seats in eastern Vidarbha. Nagpur district alone contributed 11 seats. With son of the soil Devendra Fadnavis vying another term as Maharashtra boss, Nagpur, from where the party's ideological parent RSS operates, is again looking to spin magic. The BJP is marketing initiatives such as infrastructure development, new national educational institutes, IT jobs and farm loan waiver, along with their nationalist agenda. But, the Opposition claims to have made the ruling party's ride bumpier. The most confident of the lot is Congress candidate Ashish Deshmukh, who is up against CM Fadnavis in Nagpur South-West, a carefully cultivated BJP bastion for 30 years. "I'm on my way to create history by beating Fadnavis. Please be here on result day to see it happen," he told mid-day. A savage civilisation

A few years ago, I had a confrontation with a senior newspaper editor, on stage, which quickly became viral and considerably popular. In the video, the editor insisted on equating Hinduism with Hindutva which is something I do not subscribe to. Nor do I subscribe to the idea that we can look at our country by excluding people, even distasteful extremists. Ultimately, we have to work together and live together. In the course of this conversation, a young boy asked me a question, goaded by his parents, whether I was saying that science should not be taught to savages. I did not know how to answer the question, at that particular moment, because it revealed a particular mindset that has been part of the world, since colonial times. Here was a young child using the words 'science' and 'savage' as opposites of each other—as if science's sole purpose was the rescue of the said 'savage'. It is like looking at tribal communities across India, and implying that they need to be educated, i..

'Baby Shark' attacks IMF meetings

Serious talk of trade wars and a slowing world economy fell victim on Saturday to a "Baby Shark" attack. At a news conference at the conclusion of the International Monetary Fund annual meetings, a reporter in the front row received a telephone call, and the ringtone was the ubiquitous children's song and earworm. Amid an outburst of laughter, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva continued her remarks with barely a glance at the offending mobile phone. The bane of parents and teachers worldwide, the wildly infectious song "Baby Shark" soared from the children's YouTube realm to the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year, buoyed by a dance craze and hypnotically colourful video. One US town played the song on a loop, while another, Florida's West Palm Beach, used the annoying tune to try to discourage homeless people from congregating in a public area...
