Fighting rages near Libya's capital in push by rebel army

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Just two days after rebel Libyan commander Khalifa Hifter declared a final" and decisive battle for the capital Tripoli, heavy fighting raged for a 24-hour period between his troops and militias loosely allied with the internationally backed government based in the city, officials said Saturday. The fighting came after Hifter, the leader of the self-styled Libyan National Army, said Thursday that the zero hour of his battle for Tripoli had begun, nearly eight months after he began an offensive to take the city from the country's Government of National accord supported by the UN. The LNA's media office shared images of reinforcements arriving in Tripoli, including ground troops and pickup trucks with mounted machine guns and of clashes in southern parts of the city. Hifter's forces took control of the town of al-Tawghaar, just south of Tripoli, the LNA said. But Tripoli-based forces disputed that claim. The fighting has threatened to plunge Libya into another bout of violence rivaling ...

Britain's Johnson vows to repay trust of opposition voters

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed Saturday to repay the trust of former opposition voters who gave his Conservatives a mandate to take Britain out of the European Union next month. Johnson toured a leftist bastion once represented by former Labour leader Tony Blair in a bid to show his intent to unite country after years of divisions over Brexit. The northeastern region fell to the Tories in a general election Thursday that turned into a re-run of the 2016 EU membership referendum in which Johnson championed the Brexit cause. Johnson told cheering campaigners that he understood how difficult it was for traditional Labour voters to switch sides and back his right-wing government in Britain's biggest election in generations. "I can imagine people's pencil's hovering over the ballot paper and wavering before coming down for us and the Conservatives," he said. "And I want the people of the northeast to know that we in the Conservative party -- and I -- will repay your trust." The working..

In this disinvestment environment, expecting radical improvement in Air India impractical: CMD

Business / Business Standard/ General News
As the central government is planning to invite bids for Air India soon, its CMD said on Saturday that expecting a radical improvement in the airline bordering on a turnaround is an impractical thought "in this environment of disinvestment". In a Facebook post, Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said, "Air India needs to survive till it is sold." "I wonder why is it so difficult for this appreciation to sink in and also that in this environment of disinvestment, expecting a radical improvement bordering on a turnaround is an impractical thought. That output can be given sans inputs is a grossly impractical thought," he added. Air India's net loss in 2018-19 was around Rs 8,556 crore. Lohani said: "Air Indians are indeed putting in their best even at this critical juncture and that is very very appreciable." On Dec 5, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had told Parliament that the preparation of Preliminary Information Memorandum (PIM) for inviting .....

Trump to go to Army-Navy football game for 2nd year in a row

Business / Business Standard/ General News
For the second year in a row, President Donald Trump booked the annual Army-Navy football game on his schedule. Saturday's game in Philadelphia is the 120th meeting between the two service academies and holds a singular place on the sports calendar. The 2019 matchup most likely will feature a lot of rain in addition to a heaping of tradition and salutes to service. Trump, who also was at the game in 2016 as president-elect, is the 10th commander in chief to attend the contest. In 2016, Army snapped Navy's 14-game winning streak and has now won three years in a row. But the Midshipmen entered Saturday's game as a significant favorite. At 9-2, they rank 23rd in the nation while Army's Black Knights had a 5-7 record. Traditionally, the president does not root for one academy over the other and changes sides at halftime, watching part of the game with Army fans and the other half with Navy supporters. Defense Secretary Mark Esper and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark .....

Giriraj attacks Rahul on 'rape in India' remark

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Union minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday charged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with having brought ridicule upon the country by his "rape in India" remark. The firebrand BJP leader alleged here that Gandhi's comments have been "against national interests" and often in sync with the line adopted by Pakistan. "Rahul Gandhi's remark has attracked international ridicule. In the past, he has adopted a stance on issues like the surgical strikes and the Balakot air strikes that seemed to echo Pakistan's diatribe," Singh who represents Bihar's Begusarai Lok Sabha seat told reporters. At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts are attracting investors from the world over, he has come with the "rape in India" remark, he said. Gandhi faced a strong attack from the BJP over his 'rape in India' remarks made during a poll rally in Jharkhand. "What did Gandhi imply that people from across the world were welcome to come to India and rape our sisters and daughters? It seems he..

Italy's 'Sardines' pack Rome for anti far-right rally

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Tens of thousands of members of Italy's youth-driven Sardine Movement on Saturday rallied in Rome, as part of their campaign to battle xenophobia and shake up the country's politics. The "Sardines" have become a symbol of protest against far-right firebrand leader Matteo Salvini, who served as interior minister and deputy prime minister in Italy's previous coalition government and cracked down on immigration. In Rome's immense San Giovanni Square, retiree Roberto Piperno was among those joining the crowd, which sang the anti-fascist anthem Bella Ciao, a staple of the movement's demonstrations. He turned out because he did not want to see "hatred propagated" and to do nothing would make him "ashamed to be Italian", he said. Taking aim at "populism", 32-year-old Mattia Santori, a founder of the movement, told the crowd the idea was to "bring out a new energy through a much freer and more spontaneous form" than a traditional political party "that will not be hierarchical" but would .....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Two Nigerian nationals, including a former priest, were arrested for allegedly duping people of their money by cloning their debit and credit cards, police said on Saturday. "Following a tip off, the accused were arrested from DDA Market Vasant Kunj. One car, 37 cloned debit and credit cards, 10 blank cards with electronic chips, one laptop and other valuable articles were recovered from their possession," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Devender Arya said. The interrogation of accused revealed that a Bulgarian national Eris used to steal the debit and credit cards data by placing schemer devices and hidden cameras at ATM booths and after decoding the ATM card numbers, he would send this data to Adewale to paste it on other empty cards. Lawani used to assist Adewale in pasting this data on cards available with him with the help of a magnetic .....
