mid-day Impact: Cop shows compassion to those who stigmatised him

News / Mid-Day/ News
Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Jitendra Awhad's intervention in the matter of a Mumbai cop's family thrown out of their village in Satara has come as a huge relief for constable Pravin Waghmare. Following mid-day's report on the matter, he asked the Satara SP to take strict action against the sarpanch and villagers and register an FIR in the matter. However, after Waghmare refused to file a complaint, the Satara cops just issued a warning. When asked why he refused to register a complaint in the matter, Waghmare said that the villagers were like his family. Later, the Satara cops issued a warning to the sarpanch and villagers and asked them to welcome frontline warriors and their families if they have the required permissions. Waghmare, who is attached to the Meghwadi police station, is residing with his family at the Marol police camp. He had gone to his village on May 20 to help settle his family in a flat there that he owns, because he wanted to protect them from the COVID-19 infectio..

The Bejan Daruwalla I got to know in '84 at mid-day, and loved until he passed away...

News / Mid-Day/ News
Shree Ganesha Namah! I give you Bejan Daruwalla. The delightful and bawdy Parsi astrologer and celebrated Ganpati bhakt. Also a diehard Ahmedabadi. People used to think he was from Mumbai. But he was from Ahmedabad. That’s where he was born and that’s where he died last evening of pneumonia in Apollo Hospital. His father owned textile mills. Bejan had no head for business. He was into poetry and literature. He became a professor. He used to also tell me he was Ahmedabad’s 100 metres sprint champion back in the day. And played hockey and cricket for the varsity. I used to look at him, 5 feet nothing and a roly-poly 200 pounds, he could no longer see the twinkling feet that got him trophies and won matches, and try to imagine Bejan as an athletic streak of lightning. But I failed each time. However, his girth matched his mirth, and I loved his Parsi masti and dum. We went back a long way, to 1984 in fact, before Indira's assassination and the Bhopal gas tragedy, both of..

PassOnThePad aims to help 10,000 girls

News / Mid-Day/ News
Women in the slums live amid stigma and taboo surrounding menstruation and many have lost access to sanitary care during the COVID-19 lockdown, said a 26-year-old Deane De Menezes who has in the past 30 days helped 13,000 girls and women, and aims to help another 10,000 in the coming month. Menezes, who founded Red is the New Green (RING) initiative nearly four years ago to raise awareness about menstrual health, has kicked off a campaign — #PassOnThePad — to raise funds to help more women in the city. "Given the current situation, personal hygiene should be top priority," she told mid-day. "However, due to the lockdown, women have lost access to sanitary care. With schools being shut, girls can no longer get free sanitary napkins provided to them through our vending machines, other NGOs or BMC-led programmes." Menezes said that due to the stigma, women in slums were refraining from adding sanitary napkins to the household grocery lists, as only men are stepping out of home..

BMC inquires about man's health 8 days after his death

News / Mid-Day/ News
Amid the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic, a Saat Rasta resident has accused the civic body of mismanagement. Eight days after his father died at BYL Nair Hospital, Umesh Lanjekar received a call from the BMC, inquiring about his health. Lanjekar has cited this and his struggle to get his father treated as the civic body's failure. By now, half of the city's population has or knows someone who has struggled because of lack of beds for COVID-19 and other patients. Lanjekar's father, Balkrishna Lanjekar, 87, was suffering from loose motions and after trying at several private hospitals, he was admitted to Nair hospital. "We first went to Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital on May 4. The hospital suspected him to have COVID-19 and said they don't treat COVID-19 patients. We then tried Bhatia, Wockhardt, Shushrusha and Hinduja, all refused to treat him," said Umesh. As a last resort, the family went to Kasturba Hospital, which directed them to civic-run Nair hospital. "We requested them..

A 53-year-old migrant worker, who had been doing the rounds of the Borivli railway station for the past three days, waiting for his turn to get a ticket and board a Shramik Special train to his native place in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, collapsed while standing in the queue and later died in hospital on Friday. The deceased was an auto-rickshaw driver and Malwani resident. After three days of struggle when he finally got a valid ticket, he joined the queue where several other migrants were waiting to board the train at Borivali railway station on May 28. Suddenly he started to feel dizzy and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to Shatabdi Hospital and was later taken to Cooper Hospital where he died during treatment. The deceased has been identified as Eshak Hanif Mohammed, who was a resident of Gulshan-e-Raza society in Azmi Nagar, Malwani. Eshak was an auto-rickshaw driver and was residing with his 25-year-old son Jameel in the city. His wife and two daughters live in their native vil..
