Fadnavis should not be 'scared' of Modi over height of Shivaji's statue

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Shiv Sena Monday asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to declare that the proposed statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji off the Mumbai coast will be the tallest in the world, and not be "scared" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah over the issue. The Sena said Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Maharashtra unit chief Jayant Patil has claimed the height of Shivaji's statue has been decreased to ensure that the 'Statue of Unity', dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, remains the tallest. It said Fadnavis should use the same courage that he displayed in announcing quota for the Maratha community, and not be "scared" of Prime Minister Modi and Shah over the issue of Shivaji statue's height.Decreasing the height of Shivaji's statue to make Sardar Patel's statue look taller is "narrow and distorted mindset", the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. "Fadnavis should use the same courage that he showed while granting reservation t..

Air Quality drops, improvement likely on November 20

News / Mid-Day/ National
Air quality in Delhi and the adjoining areas worsened further to the "very poor" category on Monday. However, pollution is expected to decrease from Tuesday due to favourable winds and a "significant drop" in stubble burning in neighbouring states, officials said. Delhi is currently suffering largely due to pollution generated by local sources. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was 330 against 311 on Sunday, considered "very poor", while on Saturday it was 267 or "poor", on a scale of 0 to 500. The major pollutant PM2.5, or particles with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometres, also intensified over the day as easterly winds brought along moisture. "Air quality is 'very poor' and expected to drop -- but well within very poor category, with a gradual increase due to unfavourable winds," said a forecast by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). The Weather Department expects the situation to improve from Tuesday as Delhi is expected to receive dry north-westerly..

Koregaon-Bhima case: Digvijaya Singh on Pune police radar

News / Mid-Day/ National
Pune police are likely to question senior Congressman and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh whose name had come up in the ongoing probe into the Koregaon-Bhima case almost three months ago, officials said here on Monday. "We may call or question him in connection with the matter, but there is no time-frame decided yet," Joint Police Commissioner Shivajirao Bodkhe told IANS. Singh's reference is in connection with a telephone number - said to belong to the Congress leader - found in one of the letters seized from the alleged Maoist sympathisers arrested by the police in the past few months. The Congress leader's name was raised nearly three months ago with some Bharatiya Janata Party leaders like spokesperson Sambit Patra also referring to it. "We have found a letter with some phone numbers these are being investigated," Deputy Commissioner of Police Suhas Bavche said, without elaborating. Singh had expressed his readiness to face any probe in early September and ..

The Reserve Bank said Monday it will inject Rs 8,000 crore into the system through purchase of government securities on November 22. "Based on an assessment of prevailing liquidity conditions and also of the durable liquidity needs going forward, the RBI has decided to conduct purchase of the following government securities under Open Market Operations for an aggregate amount of Rs 80 billion on November 22, 2018 (Thursday)...," it said in a statement. The OMO operation will help ease tight liquidity situation triggered by series of default by group companies of IL&FS.
