Mumbai: Samaritans spot missing child; but school says: contact parents

News / Mid-Day/ News
Shweta Jain thought she knew where her three-year-old was — where else would she be on a Tuesday morning but in school? But an hour after she watched her daughter board the bus to her school in Chembur, her husband got a call from a stranger, informing them he had seen the toddler crying on the footpath in Kurla. "We were at home when my husband received the call. We could not believe what we had heard, as I had watched Anushi boarding the school bus that morning," recalled Shweta. Their daughter, Anushi, 3, is a nursery student at Green Acre school in Chembur. She was found on the footpath in Nehru Nagar, which was a whole 7 km away from the school and wasn't even on the bus route. "We called the school first to verify what was happening. Only after our call did the school authorities check her class and realise that she was absent. We immediately rushed to Kurla to pick up our child. We are very fortunate that our daughter is safe," said the mother, expressing her gratitude ..

What was she wearing? That's the question often asked about victims," writes Ruth David, before detailing her frightening account, working under the alleged, serial sexual offender M J Akbar. One really doesn't want to know what David was wearing that day -fitted white top with a deep green skirt, down to the ankles, and sensible shoes, incidentally - when her friend mentioned that Akbar, her newspaper boss, would certainly "notice" her. I guess he would've noticed her even if she was in a black burkha. A moment of epiphany for me, on cases of sexual violence, happened recently when a friend said she felt more comfortable walking on Bombay's streets dressed, even if supposedly provocatively, in western wear. Chippad lechers automatically assumed she belonged to the upper class, and in fact, left her alone. Not sure if this tallies with others' experiences. But it does prove something essential about the #MeToo campaign, which is also addressing sexual harassment at workspaces, in th..

Mumbai: Locals allege Metro Line 2B work on despite HC orders

News / Mid-Day/ National
Even though the high court has asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to stop all construction work on the elevated Metro line 2B stretch between D N Nagar and Mandale for the next six months, residents allege that workers were spotted carrying out excavation work on S V Road near Santacruz West. The locals have been opposing construction of the elevated Metro line for some time now, and have demanded an underground one instead. Speaking to mid-day, Architect and Juhu JVPD resident, Nitin Killawala, said, "Citizen groups had filed three PILs in the high court against construction of Metro 2B. The court had clearly said that MMRDA would not commence work on the stretch for the next six months. They were only allowed to do soil testing. The Authority has not been able to produce a single valid document in court till date. Now suddenly they have started work on the stretch against the court orders." You can say goodbye to bottlenecks at Bandra station in the new year

News / Mid-Day/ National
If you've ever tried waiting for a friend or a cab outside the railway station in Bandra West, you know what a nightmare it can be just to find a few inches of space in the melee of commuters, hawkers and autorickshaws crowding the entrance at all times. The BMC has now come up with a Rs 3-crore plan to get rid of the bottleneck, with separate lanes for buses, autos and taxis, along with pick-up and drop off points for cabs and private vehicles. Lots more spaceUtilising the land handed over the by Western Railways earlier this year, the civic body will widen and concretise the Station Road and add a large concourse where pedestrians and commuters can walk or wait. The proposal, which roughly borrows certain elements of airport planning, has been formulated by H-West officials with the help of architects. At the initial stages of the planning, the project was expected to cost around R90 lakh. However, with the inclusion of additional features, the cost today is estimated to be around R..

News / Mid-Day/ News
A report in this paper about the government stepping in to handle the crowds at Lalbaugcha Raja is a step in the right direction. And, about time, too. The Lalbaugcha Raja mandal members are known to be notorious for manhandling devotees. There are numerous videos that show devotees' heads shoved towards the Ganesh idol's feet and then roughly pushed aside to make way for the next devotee, all within seconds. During the Ganeshotsav festivities in September this year, a police officer posted for bandobast at Lalbaugcha Raja, was manhandled by a resident of the area. While the resident had a pass, he had been forcibly trying to take his relatives into the pandal, which the police officer was right to object to. Violence and tempers running high are endemic during such festivities. There is very little piety or patience on display. The report also states that it was only after several complaints made to the charity commissioner's office that the commissioner himself turned up at the pan..

Mumbai Crime Branch officials have begun gathering information about unsolved cases in which minor girls were raped and murdered in the past 10 years. On Monday the Navi Mumbai police had revealed that Rehan Qureshi was also behind the rape and murder cases of two minor girls in Nehru Nagar in 2010. Two similar cases were registered in South Mumbai's Colaba and Cuffe Parade which are still unsolved. Till now Qureshi has confessed to 20 offences, of which two are the Nehru Nagar cases. "There are some cases in Mumbai which are still unsolved and we want to look at all of them once," said a senior Crime Branch officer In April 2012, a three-year-old girl's body was found in the sea near Maker Tower. She was missing from Ambedkar Nagar. Police suspect her father's role but the case is unsolved. From December 2011 to April 2012, three minor girls went missing in the Colaba-Cuffe Parade area and were later found raped and murdered. The police have questioned over 200 suspects in the case...
