Sri Lanka: Pieces of flesh strewn all over church wall, say top priest

News / Mid-Day/ News
Colombo: The St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo bore the brunt of a series of powerful blasts across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, with a top priest saying pieces of flesh were thrown all over the walls, on the sanctuary and even outside the church. Father Edmond Tillekeratne, social communications director for the Archdiocese of Colombo, told CNN that about 30 bodies were lying in the church after the blast. He said three priests had been celebrating the mass at the time. Two of them were badly hurt by flying glass and debris, and one was lightly hurt because he was behind the altar. Relatives of a blast victim grieve outside a morgue in Colombo. Pic/AP He estimated that over a thousand people had come to the church for Easter Sunday "because it is a special day." Many people came from villages, he said. He described the ground as covered in rubble and shattered glass. Do not ignore Rahat Manzil's concerns

News / Mid-Day/ News
Last week, residents of an 80-year-old building in Mahim blamed a cement roof collapse on vibrations caused by ongoing the Metro III work in the area. A report in this paper stated that after south Mumbai, residents of the Rahat Manzil building in Mahim have now blamed Metro III work for endangering their building. They are living in fear after one of their window parapets collapsed recently at night. They have pointed a finger at the ongoing underground Metro work in front of their building. While officials said a structural audit of the building has been done and the vibration levels are monitored every time work is undertaken in front of the building, it is natural for the locals to fear what more could go wrong if work continues. It is important that, if officials claim this is safe, they have a meeting with residents and locals, owners of shops and restaurants in the area fully outlining safety measures that are undertaken and honestly and convincingly answering questions and ..

How bookies made IPL betting cashless

News / Mid-Day/ News
Bookies seem to have jumped on to the digital India bandwagon, making it difficult for the police to track and arrest them. The recent arrest of five accused by the Crime Branch has led the police to information on the complete digitisation of betting syndicates. This is being done primarily to elude investigating agencies, the police said. Mumbai crime branch raided a flat in Kandivli last Tuesday and seized 26 mobile phones, a laptop, six debit/credit card swipe machines, a cash counting machine and over Rs 91,000. The police arrested five accused in connection with the betting racket on Tuesday — Abdul Kadri, 28, Milind Soni, 29, Manoj Lotalikar, 25, Roni Raichura, 34, and Yusuf Sumra, 51. Some of them are residents of Mumbai, while others hail from Rajkot and Delhi. Police suspect that these accused have connections with the business community, the Indian film industry and the underworld. Bookies' websites diamondexch9.com and playwin247.com were used by the accused to pla..

Raj Thackeray gets nod for Mumbai rally

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally accorded permission to Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for holding a public rally here at Shahid Bhagat Singh Maidan, Kala chowki on April 23. Originally, the MNS had planned to hold the rally at Wadala on April 24. But after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised objections, the BMC and the State Elections Office denied clearance to MNS for organising the event. So far, Raj has addressed around five rallies in the state, securing massive response from the people, making it a 'must view' even among all parties' candidates. In his characteristic style, he speaks out his mind in constituencies where opposition Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are contesting against the BJP-Shiv Sena. Though the MNS has no candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, his appeal of "not to vote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP" has struck a chord among the voters, especially the fence-sitters and even the youth. Parents shocked as 48 kids in Dahisar school get leaving certificate

News / Mid-Day/ National
The parents of close to 48 Std I students of Rustomjee International School, Dahisar, were in for a shock when the institution handed them over the school leaving certificates (SLC) of their wards after the result. Reason on each SLC states — 'unpaid fees'. Parents worried The parents, who have been fighting against the fee hike by the school since last year, are now worried about their children's future as admission to a new school at this stage will be difficult. The school sent the SLCs despite an order from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's education officer, asking the institution to not take any action until an enquiry into the fee hike is not over. A group of parents had approached the BMC education officer after 18 of them received SLCs on April 5. The officer had asked the school to wait for the enquiry report. However, the school administration defied the order and sent SLCs to 30 more parents on Saturday. The school management said its action is in accordanc..

Supreme Court directs Madras HC to decide plea of TikTok app on April 2

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Madras High Court to decide on April 24 a plea of TikTok app seeking to vacate of its ban order.  A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said if the Madras High Court fails to decide on the plea of TikTok app then its ban order will stand vacated. The apex court had earlier refused to stay the Madras High Court order that directed the Centre to ban the "Tiktok" app over concerns about access to pornographic content through it.  Last week, Google and Apple had blocked access to video app TikTok after the federal government sent a letter to the two platforms to abide by the state court's order. A court in Tamil Nadu refused a request by China's Bytedance Technology to suspend a ban on TikTok app. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had asked Google and Apple to block the app following the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the original Madras High Court order on April 3. As per state court, the app encouraged po..
