Colombo: Sri Lanka's police chief Pujuth Jayasundara issued a nationwide alert 10 days before Sunday's bomb attacks in the country that suicide bombers planned to hit "prominent churches", according to the warning seen by AFP. Jayasundara sent an intelligence warning to top officers on April 11. "A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," said the alert. The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that came to notice last year when it was linked to the vandalisation of Buddhist statues. She was referring to the humongous water tanker that was parked near her friend, Sir PM's pedestal outside the BMC office. Looking a bit tense, Sir PM replied, "Oh, you noticed, Lady... Well, you see I was taking precautions. You never know..." She was unable to make sense of this sudden action taken by her walking companion. "Come to the point, Pheroze, you are making me anxious," she said in a tone that sounded polite but firm. After taking a deep breath, he replied, "I am worried. I didn't sleep that night after reading about the fire in Notre Dame Cathedral. It felt like a part of me had been burnt down. I have such splendid memories of a trip with the missus. Raj ki baat

News / Mid-Day/ News
Raj Thackeray has to his credit a record of sorts — he has campaigned for different parties in the past four Lok Sabha elections. Before breaking away from Matoshree, he canvassed for Shiv Sena. Then he sought votes for his own Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and mesmerised voters who stood by him. They didn't give him a single MP in 2009, but ensured the fall of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Sena in Mumbai and many other places of influence. The same year, Raj got 13 MLAs elected, and emerged a force to reckon with. Five years later, he came under Narendra Modi's spell and sought to make the then Gujarat Chief Minister the PM. And now, Raj is asking for Modi's removal. Raj's public rallies across the state have been attractive. The opposition, that lacked teeth while attacking the BJP-Sena, is happier. The BJP is leaving no page of social media unturned to counter 'Raj ki baat.' Raj, the leader, who once praised Modi as a harbinger of hope and a tool to transform the countr..

Earth Day: From Narendra Modi to Kiran Bedi, Twitterati sends wishes

News / Mid-Day/ National
Earth Day has become a global event with over 192 countries participating, as per earthday.org. It was 49 years ago when US senator, Gaylord Nelson decided that it was important that the environment makes some space onto national news and on the minds of the people. On April 22, 1960, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of development and to show their love towards the environment. Right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kiran Bedi, twitterati has sent wishes to celebrate the day. Today on #EarthDay, we bow in reverence to Mother Earth. For years, this great planet has been home to phenomenal diversity. Today we also reiterate our commitment to work towards the well-being of our planet, focus on sustainable development and mitigating climate change. — Chowkidar Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) April 22, 2019 #EarthDay  lets act before its too late....🙏 pic.twitter.com/S5VCDAfMPz — Sudarsan Pattnaik (@sudar..

Raj Thackeray gets nod for Mumbai rally

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally accorded permission to Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for holding a public rally here at Shahid Bhagat Singh Maidan, Kala chowki on April 23. Originally, the MNS had planned to hold the rally at Wadala on April 24. But after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised objections, the BMC and the State Elections Office denied clearance to MNS for organising the event. So far, Raj has addressed around five rallies in the state, securing massive response from the people, making it a 'must view' even among all parties' candidates. In his characteristic style, he speaks out his mind in constituencies where opposition Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are contesting against the BJP-Shiv Sena. Though the MNS has no candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, his appeal of "not to vote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP" has struck a chord among the voters, especially the fence-sitters and even the youth. It was full house at Radio Club Residency Lounge, as Colaba locals and others traipsed in on Sunday (April 21) morning for a meet with SoBo's Shiv Sena candidate Arvind Sawant. How bookies made IPL betting cashless

News / Mid-Day/ News
Bookies seem to have jumped on to the digital India bandwagon, making it difficult for the police to track and arrest them. The recent arrest of five accused by the Crime Branch has led the police to information on the complete digitisation of betting syndicates. This is being done primarily to elude investigating agencies, the police said. Mumbai crime branch raided a flat in Kandivli last Tuesday and seized 26 mobile phones, a laptop, six debit/credit card swipe machines, a cash counting machine and over Rs 91,000. The police arrested five accused in connection with the betting racket on Tuesday — Abdul Kadri, 28, Milind Soni, 29, Manoj Lotalikar, 25, Roni Raichura, 34, and Yusuf Sumra, 51. Some of them are residents of Mumbai, while others hail from Rajkot and Delhi. Police suspect that these accused have connections with the business community, the Indian film industry and the underworld. Bookies' websites diamondexch9.com and playwin247.com were used by the accused to pla..

Supreme Court directs Madras HC to decide plea of TikTok app on April 2

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Madras High Court to decide on April 24 a plea of TikTok app seeking to vacate of its ban order.  A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said if the Madras High Court fails to decide on the plea of TikTok app then its ban order will stand vacated. The apex court had earlier refused to stay the Madras High Court order that directed the Centre to ban the "Tiktok" app over concerns about access to pornographic content through it.  Last week, Google and Apple had blocked access to video app TikTok after the federal government sent a letter to the two platforms to abide by the state court's order. A court in Tamil Nadu refused a request by China's Bytedance Technology to suspend a ban on TikTok app. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had asked Google and Apple to block the app following the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the original Madras High Court order on April 3. As per state court, the app encouraged po..
