How many times must it rain before you never ever leave house without an umbrella? If you're like me, this question should make you frown. For most people, whether or not to take an umbrella is a day-by-day decision, based on the weather, the sky and season. However, since 23 December 2001, I have had to remove my shoes every time before entering an aircraft anywhere in the world. All it took was a single attempt by a one person to detonate an explosive device hidden in his shoe. Richard Colvin Reid, a Britisher, boarded American Airlines Flight 63 between Paris and Miami, with explosives packed into his footwear. He failed to detonate them and was sentenced to 110 years in prison - but boy, did he change aviation security forever. He was not the first, of course. The 9/11 attacks on New York's Twin Towers by al Qaeda have permanently made air travel a hell of nearly haemmorhoidal proportions. The most excruciating moments in getting from point A to point B on the planet happen at th..

News / Mid-Day/ National
A welding failure seems to be one of the causes behind Thursday's CSMT bridge collapse. With the onset of a detailed inquiry into the incident that killed six and injured 31, officials are suspecting that a glitch in the welding of iron rods below the flooring might have caused the crash. The structural auditor might have failed to inspect the base of the FOB's flooring, civic officials believe. The bridge collapsed on Thursday killing six people and injuring 31 Also Read: These railway bridges in Mumbai are declared dangerous, but still standing A preliminary inquiry report issued by civic chief Ajoy Mehta on Friday had held Professor DD Desai's Associated Engineering Consultants responsible for carrying out the structural audit in "an irresponsible and negligent manner" and RPS Infrastructure for carrying out repairs that weren't "up to the mark". The inquiry also placed the blame on three junior engineers, a retired deputy chief engineer and a retired chief engineer on ..

mid day editorial: Compensation must not remain just lip service

News / Mid-Day/ News
More than a dozen people are still undergoing treatment at the government-run St George Hospital and GT Hospital, after the CSMT bridge collapse. Some of them have complained they have not received any official communication from the government so far, regarding the Rs 50,000 compensation that was declared by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. We want to see communication happening quickly and smoothly after such tragedies. While focusing on the bridge collapse in particular, this should be applicable to all disasters. The government machinery must swing into action as soon as possible. There has to be communication with those affected or with their families with reference to compensation. While the government may eventually give the compensation, at least give those affected the details, like by when the compensation will come, what are the documents if any required for the compensation and so on. Even though the amount may not come in a day, it would be good to assure th..

Pramod Sawant, a Manohar Parrikar loyalist and RSS man, rises to top

News / Mid-Day/ National
Panaji: From being an ayurveda practitioner to being the Goa chief minister, 46-year-old Pramod Sawant has come a long way. The two-time MLA from Sanquelim in North Goa, Sawant, who was Speaker of the state Assembly, is a dedicated RSS worker. The politician, recently seen in the RSS uniform at a Sangh event, was on Monday sworn in as the new chief minister of Goa following Manohar Parrikar's death. His elevation to the top post in the coastal state followed hectic parleys between the BJP and its alliance partners. Sawant's political career began in the BJP as a youth leader. A staunch Parrikar supporter, he had worked closely with the late leader. He won the 2012 and 2017 Assembly elections from North Goa's Sankhalim constituency, which used to be a Congress stronghold. He was among the few BJP MLAs who got re-elected in their constituencies during the state polls two years ago, when the party managed to win only 13 seats as compared to t 21 in the 2012 elections. Peter Mukerjea undergoes angiography at JJ Hospital

News / Mid-Day/ National
Former media baron Peter Mukerjea, an accused in the Sheena Bora murder case on Monday underwent angiography, which revealed he is suffering from triple vessel disease, a hospital official said. The 65-year-old, who is in jail since his arrest by the CBI in 2015, was on Sunday admitted to the state-run J J Hospital after he complained of chest pain. On Monday, he underwent angiography, an imaging test that uses X-rays to view body's blood vessels, at the hospital. "The doctors found triple vessel disease and available options are multi-vessel angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting (a major cardiac operation)," the official said. "The patient is, however, stable," he added. Triple vessel disease means three big vessels (the left anterior descending, right coronary and circumflex arteries) of a patient have blockages from atherosclerotic plaques (clogging of arteries with fatty deposits). Earlier in the day, a special CBI court here allowed Peter Mukerjea to get admitted to a..
