However, she believes that every story finds its own audience internationally because there are two kinds of international audience out there for Indian content - Indians settled abroad for generations and non-Indians. Mere Pyare Prime Minister Film Review: Toilet: Eklame katha!

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Mere Pyare Prime MinisterU/A: Social dramaDir: Rakeysh Omprakash MehraCast: Anjali Patil, Om KanojiyaRatings:  What's the first thing you wonder about this film, given its title, and the fact that no head honcho of a democratic state in world history has ever had as many biopics - shorts, docs, features, web-series - simultaneously being made on him/her, even while they're still in office? So, well, no, this isn't really a film on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Or it is, only by suggestion, since a boy writes a letter to the PM, which would be Modi (who else), but we don't see his lookalike on screen (unlike Uri, and many others in the pipeline). Be that as it may, a film that focuses on the problem of urban, open defecation, the eradication of which should be on the agenda of every corporator/legislator, and of course the PM (current, or ones to follow), belongs to proper public service advertising/announcement (PSA) space, rather than propaganda of any kind. Why are your susp..

Wanted to be authentic with my role in 'Kesari': Parineeti Chopra

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Parineeti Chopra, who plays Akshay Kumar's love interest in "Kesari, Friday said she wanted to be "authentic" to the character of a Punjabi woman in the film "Kesari" is based on the Battle of Saragarhi fought between the British Indian army's Sikh Regiment comprising of 21 soldiers and 10,000 Afghan tribesmen in 1897. Parineeti said she did not have any knowledge of that era and it was director Anurag Singh, whose research on the subject helped her in playing the part. "I used to ask several questions to Anurag before doing a scene as I did not want to go out of the character. I did not want to improvise in this world. I wanted to be as authentic as possible. "She is a Punjabi girl, so I knew an approximate world but I did not know about that kind of love story. It is the story of 1897 but we have an amazing friendship, there is no unequal relationship over here. This is a genius move by Anurag to not show the typical conservative side of husband and wife," Parineeti told reporters h..

'If not for rejections, I wouldn't have lasted so long in showbiz'

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Shilpa Shetty believes rejections made her stronger and played a huge part in her success. "I always felt I am doing the right work. I am hardworking. I hide under the sofa when I see my old films. Back then in films I had blonde hair, used to wear blue lenses and red lipstick. I wonder how I got opportunities. "I think it was all destiny. There is no successful person who hasn't faced failure. The more you get rejected you rise and give your best," Shilpa said during a session at the 20th FICCI Frames.Shilpa, who started her Bollywood journey with "Baazigar", said the success of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer did not help her much in getting good roles. "I did not feel people were accepting me as an actor. Maybe I wasn't that good actor. Even after doing films like 'Phir Milenge' and 'Dhadkan', I never got an award. I felt rejected and bad. "But I kept working hard. There was hunger in my belly... I feel if not for those rejections I wouldn't have lasted so long," she added. Shilp..

Milan Talkies Film Review: Heartland hitting saturation point

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Milan TalkiesU/A: Drama romanceDir: Tigmanshu DhuliaCast: Ali Fazal, Shraddha SrinathRatings:  This film is so inherently inconsistent, uneven in its storytelling that you feel like rooting for it still, simply because of the scattered set-pieces full of humour and insights/mannerisms of a small town, north India that you encounter once in a while. It's almost like spotting diamond among the roughs - whether that be the local uncle breaking into nostalgic songs after a few pegs of whisky, or the street goon, wannabe Vidhayak (legislator) - both being the same - desperate to test his skills as a Hindi film star. We're referring to Uttar Pradesh in particular, and Allahabad (now Prayagraaj) to be more specific - effectively a land of bakchods (blabber-mouths), with tonnes of tashan (exhibition of bravado) dictating mofussil male lives. I know this isn't as true anymore, but another aspect that has geographically remained common to Indian towns is the cinema hall (or talkies) as ..

Its a part of my personality as an actor that I have never explored, and I am so happy that I get to portray a strong and powerful girl like Saina! Akshay Kumar, whose Kesari is based on the Battle of Saragarhi, says it is sad that the story has not been made into a film until now. The Battle of Saragarhi was fought between the British Indian army's Sikh Regiment and Afghan tribesmen on September 12, 1897. Saragarhi was a tiny village in the then North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan). Led by Havildar Ishar Singh, the Sikhs chose to fight to the death, in what is touted by some military historians as one of history's greatest battles ever fought. "The Battle of Saragarhi ranks second when one would search about the top battles ever fought by India. Sadly we haven't made a film on it and not many people know about it. I also did not know much about it in detail, but I learnt a lot of things while working on the film," Akshay said in an interview. ..
