Sharmila Tagore: Enjoyed inventive ways of storytelling

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
"I'd rather binge-read than binge-watch," chuckles Sharmila Tagore, taking us by surprise. After all, in the past few weeks, the veteran has done more than her fair share of viewing as a jury member of the Lockdown Film Festival. The festival is an initiative of Carrot Films, which partnered with the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) to stream the chosen 20 films on its homegrown OTT platform, Cinemas of India. As part of the 12-member jury, Tagore enjoyed "a diverse and delectable treat" as she watched over 300 short films. "I was amazed to see the level of competency. The films were so engaging — some had humour, others were cynical. Some brought out the claustrophobia and the mental stress [that is brought on by] the lockdown while others beautifully dwelled on the positive aspects. I enjoyed the inventive ways of storytelling with limited resources and time." The selection of short films was based on several categories, including plot, ability to tell a co..

Remo D'Souza on Saroj Khan's film: She trusted me to make her biopic

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
With the passing of Saroj Khan, Bollywood lost a doyenne who had steered the Hindi film dance in a new direction and enriched it by weaving in elements of classical dance forms. While we have witnessed her magic on screen, little is known of the woman who — with grit and grace — carved her own identity in the male-dominated industry of the '70s and went on to reign supreme in her field. Talking to mid-day, her daughter Sukaina Khan reveals that choreographer-director Remo D'Souza had approached the veteran for a biopic. "A few people were in talks with my mother to make her biopic. But, she used to dismiss the idea, saying, 'Mere baare mein kya jaanna hai logon ko?' However, during her last days, she had said Remo D'Souza was keen on telling her story. She thought Remo, being a dancer himself, would understand her journey, and hence, was the perfect person to helm the project," she says. Saroj Khan. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia has mixed feelings about the digital premiere of his film, Yaara. While he is relieved that the Vidyut Jammwal and Shruti Haasan-starrer is finally seeing the light of day after being stuck in the cans for over three years, the director admits he had hoped for a big-screen release. "Only the producer can answer why the film was stuck all this while. I believe we have no option but to release our films on OTT platforms amid the pandemic. Anil Kapoor: Saroj Khan brought out the best in me

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Sarojji [Khan] was meant to give several more years to Bollywood. Her contribution to cinema is something no choreographer can match in one lifetime. She changed the craft by bringing back the old-world charm. Subhash Ghai and Sarojji were magical and often chose to work together. We were introduced during the filming of Mr India with Sri [Sridevi] and Tezaab [with Madhuri Dixit-Nene]. Madhuri was just starting her career when she recorded the song Ek do teen by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Sarojji had choreographed [the number]; N Chandra [director-producer] and I had gone to Satyanarayan hall to catch a glimpse of it. Like a proud guru, Sarojji asked Madhuri to perform the entire song in front of us. Considering Madhuri had rehearsed extensively, she aced the entire number in one shot. I gained tremendously from her as these songs [have now] become iconic, which invariably lead to the success of the film. [There were times], when I'd be on set to watch, admire and appreciate them even if I wa..

Imtiaz Ali: Saroj Khan behaved like a teenager on winning National Award for Jab We Met

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
By Imtiaz Ali Getting Saroj Khan to choreograph "Yeh ishq haye" for "Jab We Met" was purely coincidental. We were already shooting in Manali. We were speaking to choreographers in Mumbai to come and join the unit, and then it just happened that she was there in Manali. She was shooting for another film. I thought it would be the best thing in the world if she agreed to do my film. So I met her at the hotel. Her work was over for the other film. There were seven to 10 days in between, so I asked her if she could stay back for those seven or 10 days. She agreed, and then she shot our song. In those seven to 10 days, she worked relentlessly. We had around 70 dancers from different places in Himachal Pradesh. She would rehearse continuously with them. She was really a pleasure to work with. After the shooting of the song was over, I requested her if she could dance to the whole song -- the parts that Kareena (Kapoor) had done in the song. She danced for all of us -- there were 200 to 300 p..

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Badhaai Ho (2018) director Amit Ravindernath Sharma considers the Salman Khan-starrer Tubelight (2017), helmed by Kabir Khan, an "overrated film." He feels he would have done a better job directing it. Sharma got candid on the chat show, Starry Nights Gen Y. Tubelight proved to be a disappointment for the superstar, who reportedly compensated distributors for the losses they suffered. It also marked the end of his collaboration with Kabir after Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015). Wonder what Salman Khan has to tell Amit Sharma? Dil Bechara: 5 things that make Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi's film special

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Mukesh Chhabra, a well-known casting director, makes his directorial debut with the remake of the Hollywood weepie, The Fault In Our Stars in the form of Dil Bechara. This romantic-drama stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. The trailer dropped on July 6 and here are five reasons why this film feels special and could be special: 1. Sushant Singh Rajput The actor's demise feels personal. He was a bonafide movie star that had his tryst with stardom right from his debut in 2013 in the form of Kai Po Che. He plays a nonchalant protagonist in this film, always brimming with energy and enthusiasm. He quotes a dialogue about life in the trailer and that moment, for his fans, could be heartbreaking that we will never see the actor again! Dil Bechara is a perfect swan song for him! 2. The Chemistry Any love story's success hinges on the chemistry of its leads, and so far, so good! Chhabra stages the romantic montages between Sanghi and Rajput with care and charm, and despite the fact..

The unit had two major schedules pending in Delhi and Ladakh when the nationwide lockdown brought its shoot to a grinding halt in March. Even as Khan is certain about not resuming shoot until October, the superstar — along with co-producer Viacom 18 Motion Pictures — has decided to cancel the Ladakh schedule in light of the India-China military standoff along the Galwan valley. A source reveals, "Given the current scenario, shooting in Ladakh is out of the question. So, Aamir, Advait and the top brass at the studio are considering shifting the venue to Kargil. Saroj Khan: After Tezaab, actresses started fighting over me

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
I was born in 1948. My father was a rich, educated man in Pakistan. When they left, they lost everything. I come from an orthodox family but I turned out to be a freak! I used to see my shadow and dance. My mother thought I was a retard and took me to a doctor who told her 'she just wants to dance, so let her dance.'  The doctor suggested that she put me in the film industry since my family needed money. I had to take care of everyone in the house. In my first film, I did not get to dance. I played the young Shama in the film Nazrana. I had to sit in a moon and sing. I started getting more offers and became very popular as a child artist, but soon reached an age where I would not get more roles. At 10, I joined a dancing troupe and danced for one-and-a-half years. [Choreographer]Sohanlal saw me dancing and made me his assistant. I was just 13. I choreographed my first song Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai from Dil Hi Toh Hai when I was 14. It was picturised on Nutan. PL Santoshi ..

Saroj Khan passes away: Death of the institution

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Soon after the premiere of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002) at New Excelsior cinema, both Bhansali and the leading-lady Aishwarya Rai drove off together to meet the film's choreographer Saroj Khan. Khan had been unwell even during the shoot of Devdas. But her health had deteriorated considerably since, and she'd been admitted to the ICU. Bhansali told her they'd come straight from the premiere. As a colleague, Bhansali found Saroj Khan to be "temperamental, expressive, wild, 100 watt!" That night, dazed under heavy medication, barely able to open her eyes, let alone say hello, she still excitedly mumbled from bed: "Gaane pe seeti baji ki nahin! Paise ude ki nahin? [Did the audiences whistle, throw money at the songs!]" I'm referring to Devdas's Indian first night. The world premiere of course took place at a special/gala screening — celebrating Hindi cinema, peacocking in full splendour — at Cannes that year. Call it India's growing soft-power, if you will, this was un..

Manoj Bajpayee: Bhonsle would've been given 9 am show in theatres

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
In October 2018, Manoj Bajpayee's Bhonsle made waves at the Busan International Film Festival, bagging a nomination for the Kim Ji-seok Award. His act as a reticent cop who raises his voice against divisive politics was widely applauded. Almost 20 months later, as the drama enjoyed a digital premiere on SonyLIV over the weekend, the actor—who has doubled up as a producer on the project—is content. "We had decided at the start that we would take this film to as many festivals as possible. An independent film needs to create a dialogue about its merit so that it can get buyers," reasons the actor. After doing the rounds of 30 international film festivals and winning the Best Actor gong at Asia Pacific Screen Awards last year, Bajpayee started seeking a theatrical release for the movie. "We were eyeing a March-April release, but, with the lockdown, that looked like a distant dream. When SonyLiv made an offer, it seemed like a win-win situation." Now, COVID insurance for films

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
In the post-pandemic world, film shoots as we knew them will no longer be the same. Recognising the need for action in these unprecedented times, producers Atul Kasbekar and Tanuj Garg of Ellipsis Entertainment have initiated talks with a legal firm to get COVID-19 insurance for their future projects, thus setting a precedent for the industry at large. Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin-starrer Looop Lapeta, the Indian adaptation of German cult film Run Lola Run (1998), is likely to be the first film under their banner to be covered under the plan. Kasbekar reveals that they are in the nascent stages of formulating the insurance plan. "We are in talks with the legal expert, Anand Desai of DSK Legal. Insuring a film so far implied guarding the product against unforeseen incidents like the illness of an actor or occurrence of natural calamities leading to delays in the schedule. Since COVID is a new development, we are working out the details of what the insurance plan should entail. Hyp..

Anatomy of a run

yesterday
News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Endurance is a term broadly used to analyse an athlete's ability to perform a task over a long period of time, without tiring. While it is not a primary demand for a sprinter — for whom the bout of activity lasts a mere few seconds — one would still assume that the amount of endurance training given to a sprinter would be more than that given to an actor replicating one, for cinema. Imagine our surprise then when Melwyn Crasto, an athletic coach with the Central Railways since 25 years, tells us that he devotes more sessions of endurance training with Taapsee Pannu than he does with athletes. "An athlete is made to run a 100-metre race, and that's the end of it. But, an actor may only commence running when the director may cut the shot, complaining about an incorrect running form of either the actor, or another runner in the frame. This is something I learnt when training Farhan [Akhtar] for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Often, the actor is made to run repeatedly throughout the day. ..

'Only choreographer who employed mukha abhinaya'

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
I remember meeting Saroj Khan at filmmaker Satish Kaushik's sangeet party. The image of her dancing on the occasion is alive in my mind. Believe me, she had everyone's attention as she danced away. From the way her eyes lit up, to her graceful moves, it showed that she was a passionate dancer. A key point to remember is that unless you love yourself and the way your body moves, your dance will not come alive. Sarojji knew that—she always appreciated her hand movements and the way her body reacted to music. It's difficult to mention Sarojji in the past tense. When she started off in the industry, choreography was a male-dominated field. She fought for her place among the men and became a force unto herself. Still from Chane Ke Khet Mein, Anjaam (1994) The current breed of choreographers owes her so much; she paved the way for them. [Until 1989], Filmfare Awards did not have a category for Best Choreographer, but she brought about the change with her outstanding body of work. It wa..

Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Ahmed Khan, Remo D'Souza remember Saroj Khan's contribution to Bollywood dance

The bustling set fell silent as she hollered "Sound". The beats of Choli ke peechhe filled the air, as Masterji — as she was fondly addressed — with her dupatta tied firmly around her waist, showed the next set of steps to Madhuri Dixit. Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant says her first memory of Saroj Khan never quite left her. To the then 13-year-old Merchant, Khan was the woman who was entrusted with the most vibrant facet of a film — the song and dance. "Though my grandfather B Hiralalji and his brother B Sohanlalji [Khan's guru] were famous choreographers, my understanding of choreography came about with Ek do teen [Tezaab, 1988]. It was only after the song that there was so much media attention on the choreographer. Sarojji was a legend who brought the art to the forefront," says Merchant, who finally got the opportunity to work with her idol on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3. Merchant believes Khan's gumption and glorious success story encouraged women to set foot in the fi..

Subhash Ghai: Saroj Khan would extract the best from each actor

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
[Saroj Khan's death] is a personal loss. Last Saturday, when I learnt that she was hospitalised, her daughter Guddi messaged me saying she was [getting] better. Saroj was slipping in and out of consciousness and could communicate. When Guddi told her that I had called to ask for her, Saroj smiled for the first time. It was an emotional moment for me. Aruna Irani had first recommended Saroj for a song in my film Vidhaata. I told Saroj I was making a movie with Dilip Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, and had one song left to complete. It was the climax song, Pyar ka imtihan, with Sarika. I was impressed with Saroj's grace. I promised her that I would give her my next movie, if she could give me a good climax song. She worked very hard, and when she gave me the song, I gave her Hero, starring Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Seshadri. For the first time, at my insistence, a special category for Best Choreography was created by a publishing house, and Saroj won it that year, for Hero. The year that it rel..

22 Years of Satya: How an outsider was sucked into the world of the underworld

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Before he made Satya, arguably his greatest piece of work, Ram Gopal Varma made Rangeela and Daud. One was a romantic-musical and the other an unpretentious comedy. With Satya, he dealt with the theme of the underworld, a subject barely tackled in Hindi Cinema. Both Rangeela and Satya were based in Mumbai. The film is a masterclass in filmmaking, how to get the aesthetics and atmospherics right, how to squeeze gritty and galvanised performances, and how to make the world of gangsters fascinating! If Rangeela showcased the charming side of the city, the latter reflected upon the catastrophes that are waiting to explode here. If Rangeela was about an outsider who wishes to make it into the glittery world of Bollywood, Satya narrated the tale of how an outsider was sucked into the gritty world of the underworld. It was nearly impossible to pinpoint the hero of the film, the eponymous character, played by J.D. Chakravarthy, if one were to see this drama without watching the trailer or a po..

Shekhar Suman: Sushant Singh Rajput's family is being misguided

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Earlier this week, actor Shekhar Suman visited Sushant Singh Rajput's family in Patna, following it up with a strategically-timed press conference with the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav. The move did not go down well with the Rajput family, who accused him of politicising the actor's death. Back in Mumbai after the visit, Suman is taken aback that his intentions are being questioned. "It's idiotic that people think I have ulterior motives," says the veteran actor-host, who had bonded with Rajput during Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 in 2010. On June 23, Suman launched Justice For Sushant Forum to demand a CBI inquiry into the actor's death. He states that his Patna trip was to "muster support" for the online initiative. Why did he feel the need to conduct a press conference with Yadav? "It was to further the cause of the CBI inquiry. Political support can help. I also wanted to call on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, but due to COVID-19 restri..

Paltan director JP Dutta: We have never perceived China as an enemy so far, it was always a threat

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
In 2018, when JP Dutta released Paltan, a re-telling of the 1967 Indo-China military clash along the Sikkim border, the film was deemed irrelevant. At the time, the neighbouring country was a strong market for Hindi films, and Indian actors — including Sonu Sood who featured in Paltan — were doing a string of Chinese movies. Cut to 2020: the two countries are engaged in a military standoff in Ladakh's Galwan valley. The filmmaker says that the cross-border tension was simmering for a long time. "It is ironic that the audience could not [relate] to the film. It is because we have conventionally believed that Pakistan is our primary enemy. We have never perceived China as an enemy so far, but in reality, it was always a threat. When I read about the 1967 skirmishes between Indian and China, it caught my attention. I knew it was a story that needed to be told. Not many know that five years after 1962, the Indian army inflicted a heavy toll on the Chinese in a limited confronta..

Here's what the entire post read: "Dear Rhea, When the world will be pouring grief for Sushant Singh Rajput and expressing shock and condolence I stand by you firm and strong. Having been a silent spectator to your impossible attempts at trying to keep him together and going.... it is my moral duty as a mother and a citizen of this country to tell once and for all that clinical depression is a catastrophe that medical science has no solution or answer to." She went on to add, "Every time you came running to the office to seek counsel from..

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
On Monday, Disney+Hotstar announced its slate of seven films in a virtual press conference attended by Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Abhishek Bachchan. Surprisingly, the cast of Vidyut Jammwal-led Khuda Hafiz and Kunal Kemmu's Lootcase were not invited to the session despite the films being part of the OTT platform's line-up. Jammwal expressed his disappointment as he tweeted, "Seven films scheduled for release but only five are deemed worthy of representation. Two films receive no invitation or intimation. The cycle continues. (sic)" Even as Sushant Singh Rajput's demise has sparked a dialogue about the industry's toxic star system, the press conference shows how Bollywood is far from being a level playing field. Aahana Kumra, Jammwal's co-star in Khuda Hafiz, says, "I found out about the press conference after seeing Vidyut's tweet. I have not bothered asking why I wasn't informed. I know it won't lead to an answer." Vidyut Jammwal With Marzi and Betaal behin..

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Right after the release of Thappad in February, director Anubhav Sinha had begun work on his next. The yet-untitled action thriller was to mark his reunion with Ayushmann Khurrana after Article 15 (2019). While he had originally hoped to shoot the film abroad, he was compelled to rework his plans as several countries went into lockdown in March. "I was in the process of finalising the location abroad when COVID-19 [broke out]. So, we thought shooting in India would be safer and started scouting for locations here. We were supposed to shoot from April to June. However, I returned from the recce on March 8, and soon after, we went into lockdown," recounts Sinha. Even as several filmmakers are considering returning to work, the director will take his time before resuming his place behind the camera. "As filmmakers, we get so absorbed in getting the right shot that we tend to ignore the precautions. That is not healthy. So, I am not bullish about shooting anytime soon." Meanwhile, he is t..
