Nawazuddin Siddiqui: There's no scope of whitewashing Bal Thackeray

yesterday
News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
A space of less than a week separates Nawazuddin Siddiqui from what could be the most decisive film of his career. Ever since the trailer of Thackeray — the biopic on the late Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray — dropped online, it was widely debated whether releasing the film in the year of elections was a way of swaying public opinion. "Balasaheb ko propaganda ki kya zaroorat?," cuts in Siddiqui, when asked if the Abhijit Panse-directed biopic is a propaganda film. "It is his birthday, so the film is releasing now. It has nothing to do with any political motive. If the film were to be released any other year, the response wouldn't be different." In Bollywood, biopics tend to glorify the muse. Considering the film has, at its heart, a man who was charismatic and controversial in equal measure, the makers would be tempted to take the same approach. "Balasaheb was already a controversial man. There is no scope of whitewashing him or playing neutral with him. The right ap..

Glass Movie Review - High-minded but lacks lucidity and cohesion

News / Mid-Day/ Hollywood
Glass U/A: Drama, Mystery, Sci-FiDirector: M. Night ShyamalanCast: Sarah Paulson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoyRating:  Shyamalan’s earliest films (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs) were brilliant, they intrigued, shocked and entertained all at the same time. The same cannot be said about the films that came later. The big budget ones especially were all jumbled up and schlocky. It felt as though the director never really achieved his vision. ‘Glass’ is a far better effort in terms of visual context but it fails on cohesion and lucidity – especially in the third act dominated by Shyamalan’s signature twists. Glass, a sort of sequel to both Unbreakable and Split, spends its two hours plus without a strong story to tell. It is every bit as inconceivable and snaky a film as his worst but it still has a psychological depth that could have amounted to much more - if only the director had been a little more focussed. There’s so much he is..

Why Cheat India Movie Review - No, seriously... Why?

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Why Cheat IndiaU/A: Drama SatireDirector: Soumik SenCast: Emraan Hashmi, Shreya DhanwantharyRating: The 'curse of the second half' in Hindi pictures is simply so severe, especially when it comes to films with well-known faces, that even as I find myself really enjoying a movie, there's a radar at the back of the brain constantly cautioning one to only hope that the post-interval portions even live up to the first half — by half. If so, then as an audience, you're pretty much through. Is this movie an exception in that regard? Well, it eventually starts descending to such levels of random, thoughtless spinning of the yarn that by the end of it you're not even too sure it's the same film that you had started with in the first place. And hell yeah, it begins really well, what with highlighting the academic strains of being a teenaged 'padhaku' kid, Sattu (the boy's so brilliantly cast), in a lower-middle class family in Lucknow, coaxed into cracking a coveted engineering entrance ..

Karishma interacted with the media to promote Bedhab on Monday. "I don't come from any filmy background. I am from London. I was modelling in England, and then I moved to Bombay about 12 years ago. In 2006, I did a Kingfisher swimsuit calendar show and after that, I did a Telugu movie directed by Prabhudheva. "During that time, 'Bigg Boss' happened and I also hosted a TV special for the Indian Premier League. I did some amazing cameos in a film like 'Freaky Ali' with Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and in another film which starred Arshad Warsi," she said. Karishma is content with how her journey has shaped up. "I like the place that I am in, where I am getting to do what I love. I get to dabble in acting, modelling and hosting. I don't want to get typecast in one specific genre of the entertainment industry. Now I am ..

Veteran writer Vijayendra Prasad, who has worked on the "Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi" -- the most controversial film of his career -- says Kangana Ranaut, who stepped in to "complete" the film, did no less than what the movie's initial director Krish did. Excerpts from an interview: So many controversies. Can we talk about them? A. Sure, but let me be very honest, I will answer only if I can. Otherwise I won't lie to you. What are the controversies? Well first of all, the original director Krish was relieved of his duties and replaced by the film's leading lady Kangana Ranaut? A. I don't think 'relieved' is the correct word. Krish wasn't asked to go. The picture was started in June 2018 and was supposed to be released in August 2019. But because of the volume of shooting, the film got delayed. And Krish, who shares a very good relationship with Mr Balakrishna was committed to direct a film on the latter's father NTR's life after the original director for that project, Teja, c..

Here's what happened when Maniesh Paul spent a day with BSF jawans

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
No sooner does Maniesh Paul set foot at the Border Security Force (BSF) base camp in Jammu than the news is broken to him - a sniper has been planted on location, and his aim is the coveted television show host, who has turned up at the cold climes of the city to 'Spread The Cheer' amidst Army men as part of Comedy Central India's annual event. Paul, animated as he is when donning his hat as a performer, lends a suspicious cursory glance before the proceedings serve as a distraction. He has a feat at hand - to give a go at the military drills that are part of the soldiers' daily routine. Paul takes part in a kabaddi match A background in crossfit serves as his saving grace as he is tested against the fittest. He follows a BSF jawan as the latter navigates a rope to travel a few meters. Paul replicates the task, albeit failing to get past a few feet. Appreciable, one would say. Yet, much like the host with celebrated comic timing, the Army men too have a joke or two that they can humo..

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga brings the father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor together on screen for the first time. The unusual and unique script of the film played the big role to bring this duo together. As the major chord of the film touches upon the issue of the society which needs to be told and has intense bonding between father-daughter this was the biggest reason that drew Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor to do the film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. The story of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga will be instrumental in pushing the queer conversation forward in India. Representation of the LGBTQ community on celluloid has been a tedious one and with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga it will be a great concept and lesson to be shared with all the parents out there. From showing homosexual characters onscreen ridden with stereotypes and used only as fillers, the identity of a gay person has evolved manifold in the Indian film industry and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga b..

Aahana Kumra: Constant political interference will scare filmmakers

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
Hindi films with a political plot have always received flak in the country. Actress Aahana Kumra, whose latest outing The Accidental Prime Minister was termed a "propaganda film", says constant interference of politicians will scare away filmmakers from making such movies. In the past too, movies like Indu Sarkar, Rajneeti, Thackeray, Manto and Airlift have faced tension from political groups. Should politics play spoilsport for cinema? Aahana told IANS: "The reason why political films are not made in India is because we get upset about a lot of things. We don't see things as art, we see it as 'this is trying to influence someone or trying to motivate something' But I feel that if this is going to be a constant interference people will be scared to make films on politics. One Less God Review - A rather pretentious mimicking of real tragedy

News / Mid-Day/ Hollywood
One Less God U/A: Drama, ThrillerDirector: Lliam WorthingtonCast: Joseph Mahler Taylor, Sukhraj Deepak, Mihika RaoRating:  As a film that hopes to capture the terror heralded by the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, 'One Less God' is rather feeble, nondescript and ineffective. The scope is narrow and the budget too small to do justice to a disaster that is amongst the most unforgettable in recent history. This is drama written around a real-life crisis but at no point does it feel real. The 2008 Mumbai attacks included a series of terrorist strikes that felled 164 people across south Mumbai - carried out by 10 members of the Laskar-e-Taiba, an Islamic terrorist organisation based in Pakistan. But none of that drama or tragedy is captured here with any grit or enticement. The Mumbai siege is presented in a slap-dash fashion that never really gets the audience involved. The focus is largely on the Taj Mahal hotel and what it's guests went through in the final hours before their ..

News / Mid-Day/ Bollywood
What does "Paapi Pappi", "Maneater", "Mard Ko Dard Hoga" and "Chatri Ke Peche Kya Hai" have in common? They're each representing a different month in this one heck of a unique calendar that the makers of the Shakeela biopic have presented to the world. This year of 2019 got even more interesting as the 12 months of The year will now have a quirky visual representation for each month. The poster has been designed as a fictional movie poster for each month with hilariously cheeky titles and Richa in a different look for each, as an ode to the pulp movies of the late 90s, the era in which Shakeela herself dominated the screens. Based on the life of the adult film star of the south film industry, the film helmed by award-winning director Indrajit Lankesh becomes the first film to have a calendar of its own. The calendar comes with a fun hashtag calling it #2019ShakeelaKeNaam and that truly is this case, given the high anticipation surrounding the film so far. Now, Karni Sena protests against Manikarnika's release

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
In what appears to be becoming an annual practice, Shree Rajput Karni Sena has resurfaced to protest the release of yet another film. It was a year ago that the fringe outfit had raised objections to the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat (2018), citing that it "distorted history". Cut to the present day — the objection remains the same, but the queen in question has changed. On Thursday, the group protested against the release of Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, alleging that the period drama alludes to Rani Laxmibai's relationship with a British officer. They also claimed that the film shows the queen dancing to a special number, which is against their tradition. When mid-day reached out to Sukhdev Singh Shekhavat, national head of the Karni Sena, he said, "Time and again, we have seen that filmmakers try to take liberties by showing certain scenes [with the purpose of] adding titillation. We won't tolerate such nonsense." Deepika Padukone in ..
