Abhishek Bachchan on Breathe 2: Would have performed role based on conjecture

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
"One of the most significant aspects of long-form narration — as in the case of a web show — is the amount of time that must be devoted to character-building," says Abhishek Bachchan. For his role of a psychiatrist dealing with the kidnapping of his daughter in Breathe 2, Bachchan had ample discussion, debates too, with director Mayank Sharma. "Since we were not confined to a time window, we focused [on building] characteristics for Avinash, and [deciphering] how he would react in a situation. There are character traits that could be used later [in the show]. For instance, in one scene, Nitya [name of his wife's character] and Avinash see their daughter after a long time on an iPad that they receive. While Nitya's reaction is maternal, Avinash doesn't react. There was thought put into why he wouldn't be dramatic. He is a weighted person. As a psychiatrist, he is accustomed to dealing with bad news, and it takes a lot to faze him," Bachchan tells mid-day of the show that rel..

Swara Bhasker: Rape is fetishised, but Rasbhari makes us squirm

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Swara Bhasker's latest offering Rasbhari has been in the news all week. The Amazon Prime Video series, which has Bhasker play a teacher whose teenage student becomes obsessed with her, has been slammed for its risqué content. The actor admits she too had her share of doubts when the project came her way. "Since it deals with adolescent sexuality and infatuation, the show depends heavily on the writing. The reference point was Malena [2000], but this show has a comic take. Malena was quite sexually explicit, so I asked for a full script. Upon reading it, I realised this show goes beyond adolescent sexuality and highlights the prejudices of repressed societies. It shows how on one hand, people lust after women, but on the other hand, female sexuality is equally vilified," says Bhasker. The explicit display of sexuality hasn't gone down well with many, with a section of netizens terming it "soft porn". But she reasons it was necessary to tell the story from a male gaze. "The story ..

Remo D'Souza on Saroj Khan's film: She trusted me to make her biopic

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
With the passing of Saroj Khan, Bollywood lost a doyenne who had steered the Hindi film dance in a new direction and enriched it by weaving in elements of classical dance forms. While we have witnessed her magic on screen, little is known of the woman who — with grit and grace — carved her own identity in the male-dominated industry of the '70s and went on to reign supreme in her field. Talking to mid-day, her daughter Sukaina Khan reveals that choreographer-director Remo D'Souza had approached the veteran for a biopic. "A few people were in talks with my mother to make her biopic. But, she used to dismiss the idea, saying, 'Mere baare mein kya jaanna hai logon ko?' However, during her last days, she had said Remo D'Souza was keen on telling her story. She thought Remo, being a dancer himself, would understand her journey, and hence, was the perfect person to helm the project," she says. Saroj Khan. Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Ahmed Khan, Remo D'Souza remember Saroj Khan's contribution to Bollywood dance

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
The bustling set fell silent as she hollered "Sound". The beats of Choli ke peechhe filled the air, as Masterji — as she was fondly addressed — with her dupatta tied firmly around her waist, showed the next set of steps to Madhuri Dixit. Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant says her first memory of Saroj Khan never quite left her. To the then 13-year-old Merchant, Khan was the woman who was entrusted with the most vibrant facet of a film — the song and dance. "Though my grandfather B Hiralalji and his brother B Sohanlalji [Khan's guru] were famous choreographers, my understanding of choreography came about with Ek do teen [Tezaab, 1988]. It was only after the song that there was so much media attention on the choreographer. Sarojji was a legend who brought the art to the forefront," says Merchant, who finally got the opportunity to work with her idol on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3. Merchant believes Khan's gumption and glorious success story encouraged women to set foot in the fi..

Subhash Ghai: Saroj Khan would extract the best from each actor

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
[Saroj Khan's death] is a personal loss. Last Saturday, when I learnt that she was hospitalised, her daughter Guddi messaged me saying she was [getting] better. Saroj was slipping in and out of consciousness and could communicate. When Guddi told her that I had called to ask for her, Saroj smiled for the first time. It was an emotional moment for me. Aruna Irani had first recommended Saroj for a song in my film Vidhaata. I told Saroj I was making a movie with Dilip Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, and had one song left to complete. It was the climax song, Pyar ka imtihan, with Sarika. I was impressed with Saroj's grace. I promised her that I would give her my next movie, if she could give me a good climax song. She worked very hard, and when she gave me the song, I gave her Hero, starring Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Seshadri. For the first time, at my insistence, a special category for Best Choreography was created by a publishing house, and Saroj won it that year, for Hero. The year that it rel..

That's the promise of action and fitness that you get from Cruise. Let's look at some of the most amazing roles played by the actor, as Sony PIX celebrates his 58th birthday. News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Even as Netflix is fielding criticism online, Rana Daggubati is proud that his Telugu presentation, Krishna and his Leela, has grabbed eyeballs. A section of the audience has alleged that the film — which shows the protagonist named Krishna having sexual encounters with several women, one of whom is named Radha — hurts religious sentiments. Daggubati keeps mum on the controversy, instead focussing on how the movie has appealed to the youth. "When I heard the story, I felt it would easily connect with the youngsters. It had pop culture references while telling a simple story that is also globally relevant. In a way, it's perfect that it released on an OTT platform. At its heart, the story resonated with teens and young adults," he says. If streaming platforms have witnessed a sharp spike in viewership during the lockdown, it has also led to the audiences taking keen interest in regional cinema. Anil Kapoor: Saroj Khan brought out the best in me

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Sarojji [Khan] was meant to give several more years to Bollywood. Her contribution to cinema is something no choreographer can match in one lifetime. She changed the craft by bringing back the old-world charm. Subhash Ghai and Sarojji were magical and often chose to work together. We were introduced during the filming of Mr India with Sri [Sridevi] and Tezaab [with Madhuri Dixit-Nene]. Madhuri was just starting her career when she recorded the song Ek do teen by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Sarojji had choreographed [the number]; N Chandra [director-producer] and I had gone to Satyanarayan hall to catch a glimpse of it. Like a proud guru, Sarojji asked Madhuri to perform the entire song in front of us. Considering Madhuri had rehearsed extensively, she aced the entire number in one shot. I gained tremendously from her as these songs [have now] become iconic, which invariably lead to the success of the film. [There were times], when I'd be on set to watch, admire and appreciate them even if I wa..

Imtiaz Ali: Saroj Khan behaved like a teenager on winning National Award for Jab We Met

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
By Imtiaz Ali Getting Saroj Khan to choreograph "Yeh ishq haye" for "Jab We Met" was purely coincidental. We were already shooting in Manali. We were speaking to choreographers in Mumbai to come and join the unit, and then it just happened that she was there in Manali. She was shooting for another film. I thought it would be the best thing in the world if she agreed to do my film. So I met her at the hotel. Her work was over for the other film. There were seven to 10 days in between, so I asked her if she could stay back for those seven or 10 days. She agreed, and then she shot our song. In those seven to 10 days, she worked relentlessly. We had around 70 dancers from different places in Himachal Pradesh. She would rehearse continuously with them. She was really a pleasure to work with. After the shooting of the song was over, I requested her if she could dance to the whole song -- the parts that Kareena (Kapoor) had done in the song. She danced for all of us -- there were 200 to 300 p..

'Only choreographer who employed mukha abhinaya'

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
I remember meeting Saroj Khan at filmmaker Satish Kaushik's sangeet party. The image of her dancing on the occasion is alive in my mind. Believe me, she had everyone's attention as she danced away. From the way her eyes lit up, to her graceful moves, it showed that she was a passionate dancer. A key point to remember is that unless you love yourself and the way your body moves, your dance will not come alive. Sarojji knew that—she always appreciated her hand movements and the way her body reacted to music. It's difficult to mention Sarojji in the past tense. When she started off in the industry, choreography was a male-dominated field. She fought for her place among the men and became a force unto herself. Still from Chane Ke Khet Mein, Anjaam (1994) The current breed of choreographers owes her so much; she paved the way for them. [Until 1989], Filmfare Awards did not have a category for Best Choreographer, but she brought about the change with her outstanding body of work. It wa..

Saroj Khan: After Tezaab, actresses started fighting over me

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
I was born in 1948. My father was a rich, educated man in Pakistan. When they left, they lost everything. I come from an orthodox family but I turned out to be a freak! I used to see my shadow and dance. My mother thought I was a retard and took me to a doctor who told her 'she just wants to dance, so let her dance.'  The doctor suggested that she put me in the film industry since my family needed money. I had to take care of everyone in the house. In my first film, I did not get to dance. I played the young Shama in the film Nazrana. I had to sit in a moon and sing. I started getting more offers and became very popular as a child artist, but soon reached an age where I would not get more roles. At 10, I joined a dancing troupe and danced for one-and-a-half years. [Choreographer]Sohanlal saw me dancing and made me his assistant. I was just 13. I choreographed my first song Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai from Dil Hi Toh Hai when I was 14. It was picturised on Nutan. PL Santoshi ..

Saroj Khan passes away: Death of the institution

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Soon after the premiere of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002) at New Excelsior cinema, both Bhansali and the leading-lady Aishwarya Rai drove off together to meet the film's choreographer Saroj Khan. Khan had been unwell even during the shoot of Devdas. But her health had deteriorated considerably since, and she'd been admitted to the ICU. Bhansali told her they'd come straight from the premiere. As a colleague, Bhansali found Saroj Khan to be "temperamental, expressive, wild, 100 watt!" That night, dazed under heavy medication, barely able to open her eyes, let alone say hello, she still excitedly mumbled from bed: "Gaane pe seeti baji ki nahin! Paise ude ki nahin? [Did the audiences whistle, throw money at the songs!]" I'm referring to Devdas's Indian first night. The world premiere of course took place at a special/gala screening — celebrating Hindi cinema, peacocking in full splendour — at Cannes that year. Call it India's growing soft-power, if you will, this was un..

22 Years of Satya: How an outsider was sucked into the world of the underworld

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Before he made Satya, arguably his greatest piece of work, Ram Gopal Varma made Rangeela and Daud. One was a romantic-musical and the other an unpretentious comedy. With Satya, he dealt with the theme of the underworld, a subject barely tackled in Hindi Cinema. Both Rangeela and Satya were based in Mumbai. The film is a masterclass in filmmaking, how to get the aesthetics and atmospherics right, how to squeeze gritty and galvanised performances, and how to make the world of gangsters fascinating! If Rangeela showcased the charming side of the city, the latter reflected upon the catastrophes that are waiting to explode here. If Rangeela was about an outsider who wishes to make it into the glittery world of Bollywood, Satya narrated the tale of how an outsider was sucked into the gritty world of the underworld. It was nearly impossible to pinpoint the hero of the film, the eponymous character, played by J.D. Chakravarthy, if one were to see this drama without watching the trailer or a po..

Shekhar Suman: Sushant Singh Rajput's family is being misguided

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Earlier this week, actor Shekhar Suman visited Sushant Singh Rajput's family in Patna, following it up with a strategically-timed press conference with the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav. The move did not go down well with the Rajput family, who accused him of politicising the actor's death. Back in Mumbai after the visit, Suman is taken aback that his intentions are being questioned. "It's idiotic that people think I have ulterior motives," says the veteran actor-host, who had bonded with Rajput during Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 in 2010. On June 23, Suman launched Justice For Sushant Forum to demand a CBI inquiry into the actor's death. He states that his Patna trip was to "muster support" for the online initiative. Why did he feel the need to conduct a press conference with Yadav? "It was to further the cause of the CBI inquiry. Political support can help. I also wanted to call on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, but due to COVID-19 restri..

Chairs not banned on Christopher Nolan's sets

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
Stories about what Christopher Nolan bans on his movie sets started doing the rounds on social media after a magazine published an interview with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.Hathaway, who has worked with Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Interstellar (2014), praised the director for not allowing chairs on his set. In her interview, the actor said Nolan's reasoning for not allowing chairs is "if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they're sitting, they're not working". "I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he's onto something with the chair thing," she added. The story prompted several journalists and critics to criticise the "no chairs" rule, forcing the director's team to set the record straight. "For the record, the only things banned from sets are cell phones [not always successfully] and smoking [very successfully]," Nolan's spokes..

Abhishek Bachchan on Breathe: Into the Shadows: Less judgment in web than in cinema

News / Mid-Day/ Entertainment
The gripping trailer of Breathe: Into the Shadows only proves what we knew all this while — Abhishek Bachchan, who returned to the big screen with Manmarziyaan (2018) after a two-year hiatus, will not settle for the ordinary in his second innings. The actor is intrigued as well as excited as he forays into the digital world with the Amazon Prime Video series. Though he is headlining the sophomore season of the thriller, Bachchan says he walked into the project with a clean slate. "I loved the first episode of the first season. I purposely didn't watch the rest of the edition because I didn't want to be influenced by it. Mayank [Sharma, creator-director] has incorporated some of his learnings from the first season into this one," says the actor, who plays a parent searching for his missing child. In the cut-throat competitive world of films, Friday box-office numbers create an undue pressure on actors. In contrast, the digital world is considered an artiste-friendly medium, allow..
