India asks ICJ to declare Jadhav's trial in Pakistan 'unlawful'

News / Mid-Day/ News
India on Monday said the trial of its national Kulbhushan Jadhav by a Pakistani military court "hopelessly failed" to satisfy even the minimum standards of due process and requested the International Court of Justice to declare it "unlawful". India's plea came as the top UN court began a four-day public hearing in the case of Jadhav, 48, who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage. India, during the first day of the hearing, based its case on two broad issues -- breach of Vienna Convention on consular access and the process of resolution. "It is an unfortunate case where the life of an innocent Indian is at risk," ex-solicitor general Harish Salve, who was representing India, said. "Pakistan's story is solely based on rhetoric and not facts," he said, adding that Jadhav's continued custody without consular access should be declared unlawful. Opposition demands Nitish Kumar's resignation over Bihar rape case

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Opposition on Monday created a ruckus in the Bihar Assembly demanding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation, two days after a special POCSO court in Muzaffarpur directed the CBI to investigate the involvement of Kumar and two IAS officers in the infamous shelter home rape case. Legislators of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Left parties disrupted proceedings in both houses of the Assembly shouting slogans and demanding Nitish Kumar's resignation. While RJD spokesperson Bhai Virendra demanded a narco test of Nitish Kumar to confirm his involvement in the case, senior RJD leader and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, said, "After the court directed the CBI to probe the chief minister's role in suppressing facts, Nitish Kumar should resign." 12 minutes ago
Business / Business Standard/ General News
Aditya Birla Group firm Grasim Industries Monday said it has inked a pact to acquire chlor-alkali business of KPR Industries by way of a slump sale for a cash consideration of Rs 253 crore. The company, which has inked a definitive agreement to acquire the business, said the transaction will be funded through internal accruals. KPR Industries' chlor-alkali business comprises an under-construction 200 TPD project at Balabhadrapuram, Andhra Pradesh. As part of the deal, Grasim would take over the assets and identified liabilities associated with the business. Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir): Four Army personnel, including a major, and two Jaish terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Monday, three days after a suicide bomber from the group drove his explosives-laden vehicle into a CRPF bus in the area, defence officials said. A civilian was also killed in the exchange of fire in Pinglan area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district, they said. "The terrorists are believed to be linked to the February 14 car bombing. Militants fired at forces as the searches got underway, triggering a gun battle, officials said. The gunfight started late on Sunday after security forces, including the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG..
