"I will never forget choreographing Madhuri Dixit with Sarojji", says Remo D'Souza

Choreographer-director Remo D’Souza had the unique privilege of working with the legendary Saroj Khan in her last film. Says Remo, “When I was offered to do Kalank by Karan Johar and he mentioned that I’d be choreographing a song with Sarojji, I was scared and excited. Scared, because Sarojji had such a larger than life persona, and she was an institution. I considered her my grandmother. She was definitely the grandmother of choreography in Hindi cinema. Before she came there were great choreographers. But none got their due recognition. Sarojji paved the way for all of us choreographers. If she hadn’t been the force that she was, we who came later would have continued to be footnotes in the credit titles.” So what was it like shooting the song ‘Ghar More Pardesia’ with the legendary Saroj Khan? Remo recalls the moment with nervousness. “There was Sarojji on one side and Madhuriji on the other. I was just a student happy to learn from these two legends. I made it very clear that I wa..

Manoj Bajpayee on going digital during the lockdown

Manoj Bajpayee’s superlative performance in the OTT series The Family Man and now the feature film Bhonsle which was premiered on the digital domain recently, has made him a huge draw on the OTT platform. Says Manoj, “Because of the lockdown, the OTT has hit a peak. Audiences are watching all sorts of content, even the ones they don’t find interesting. They see everything and post ruthlessly honest views on the social media. The OTT has the advantage of the lockdown. It has become a strong alternative for entertainment in India.” Manoj says he had foreseen the popularity of this medium. “The OTT is a very new medium. I remember doing a couple of short films for YouTube. That’s when I realized that this is the future. Netflix started booming. The first thing I saw in the US was Narcos. I was blown away. I realized India too would not remain untouched by the digital boom. And that’s exactly what has happened.” The lockdown has given Manoj a chance to re-assess his life and career. “I wa..

"It's like losing my mother," Ahmed Khan remembers Saroj Khan

Saroj Khan was like a mother to Ahmed. “Everything I know about choreography, I learnt from her. At the age of 12, I was watching her do the choreography of ‘Kaate Nahin Kat-Te’ in Mr India. I knew then and there that I wanted to be a choreographer.” At 16, Ahmed began assisting Saroj Khan. “I was a child bewildered and lost. She mothered me. She nurtured my talent. I was just like her own son (choreographer Raju Khan). Whatever I know about choreography I learnt..
