World at her feet How many people do you need to fix a dress? Kareena Kapoor Khan navigates her way to a set in Goregaon on Tuesday. Pic/Satej Shinde Break ke baad The folks at The Bombay Canteen have used their 15-day-long hiatus productively. Whether it was chef Thomas Zacharias embarking on a trip to Odisha to learn more about the state's cuisine, or leveraging the break to entertain us with quirky social media posts, of which, their fun take on the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line catchphrase — "TBC is Upgrading" — was particularly amusing. Now that it has reopened, partner at the restaurant, Yash Bhanage told this diarist, "Having completed nearly five years, we wanted an upgrade with a new look and feel while retaining the very soul that people have grown to love. We are re-opening with 20 new dishes, inspired by our travels and experiences across India. Space also has an exciting calendar in the months ahead, including fun collaborations and cocktail takeovers." Stew ..

Pradeep Sharma: People shouldn't judge police on the basis of films

News / Mid-Day/ News
From shooting gangsters and terrorists dead to donning a politician's topi, Mumbai's ace encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma has come a long way. He is now set to contest the assembly polls from Nalasopara on a Shiv Sena ticket next month. According to Sharma, if there was no retirement age for cops, 'I would have donned khaki till my last breath'. We pin him down for a chat. Sharma , who joined the Shiv Sena last week, has served the police force for more than 38 years. He took voluntary retirement to try his luck in Maharashtra politics. Though he has made up his mind to be part of state politics, his heart still remains with the police force. He says, politics is another way for him to continue serving the people. Pradeep Sharma in uniform From police officer to encounter specialist and now political aspirant, describe your journey...If a policeman wishes, he can help society to a great extent. The best a movie can get

News / Mid-Day/ News
We're all aware of the sort of male stalking that endangers women in public spaces, affecting their mental health, let alone basic security, that one can't talk about enough. And one mustn't stop either. Therefore, this is not to even vaguely compare the gravity of crimes — but I have been stalked twice. Once, a decade ago, when the person's relentless 24x7 text messages would eventually heat up my cell-phone into complete collapse, while some of them would relate to what I'm wearing — having stepped out of a building elevator! When I did report the case to the city's top cop, upon one of the messages that sounded suicidal, the police, tracking phone records, apprehended the person in less than a few hours. They found her to be mentally imbalanced; she'd apparently watched films sitting next to me at press previews, and assumed that we'd been watching movies with each other. She was strongly warned. No case registered. I didn't know the person. Still don't. The second one, ..

'Boris regards Parl as handicap to his plans'

News / Mid-Day/ News
London: Britain's Supreme Court opened proceedings Tuesday to decide whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson broke the law when he suspended Parliament just weeks before the UK is due to leave the European Union, in a case that pits the powers of elected lawmakers against those of the executive. Johnson sent lawmakers home from September 9 until October 14, which is barely two weeks before the scheduled Brexit day of October 31. The decision outraged many lawmakers, who say it's designed to prevent them from challenging his plan to take Britain out of the EU next month, with or without a divorce deal. The suspension sparked legal challenges, to which lower courts have given contradictory rulings. England's High Court said the suspension was a political rather than legal matter, but Scottish court judges ruled last week that Johnson acted illegally to avoid democratic scrutiny. The UK's top court is being asked to decide who was right, in a case scheduled to last up to three days. Johnson ..
