Congress to finalize candidates, manifesto by February

News / Mid-Day/ National
With a view to preventing infighting due to ticket distribution, the Congress has directed all its state units to expedite the process of candidate selection as well as state-wise electoral understanding for the Lok Sabha before this month which shall be then approved by the Congress Election Committee. The recent Assembly polls, particularly in Rajasthan, saw a lot of infighting in the Congress over ticket distribution, causing embarrassment to the central leadership. Several disgruntled party leaders staged protests and over a dozen contested as independents, denting the party's showing. In order to avoid a repeat of a similar situation, the state units have been told to expedite the procedure of candidate selection and submit the lists before the month end. One of the major issues discussed during the recent Congress President Rahul Gandhi's meeting with general secretaries and state unit chiefs was ticket distribution. "Ticket distribution has always been a contentious issue wi..

Shot twice, father drives daughter to exam centre, then visits hospital

News / Mid-Day/ News
Begusarai: In a surreal series of events, a man with a gunshot wound dropped off his daughter at an examination centre before driving himself to a private hospital. The alleged incident occurred in  Begusarai district of Bihar. In the rare case of exemplary courage that comes to light from West Bengal, the man, identified as Ram Kripal Singh, was driving his motorbike along with his 18-year-old daughter Damini Kumari, to an Intermediate examination centre. All of a sudden six miscreants halted them near Lasrahi village on the Birpur-Begusarai road and tried to tie her father's hands, said Damini to Times of India. The miscreants later allegedly fired two bullets at the man from close range. "The criminals first tried to tie his hands. When I opposed, they pumped two bullets into his chest at a very close range and fled on their bikes," said Damini. She went further to say that her father, who is a former mukhiya of the Birpur east panchayat, did not pay heed to her advice and ..

News / Mid-Day/ National
Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir): Four Army personnel, including a major, and two Jaish terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Monday, three days after a suicide bomber from the group drove his explosives-laden vehicle into a CRPF bus in the area, defence officials said. Experts demand responsible restoration of UNESCO site at CSMT

News / Mid-Day/ National
Gothic-style statues, or zoo-zoo look-alikes — conservationists question CSMT restoration as images of shoddy work surface on social media. The issue came to light on Sunday after conservation architect Vikas Dilawari posted pictures of some restored figurines on Twitter. The Roman sculptures on the World Heritage Site were seen blunted and disfigured in the images he shared. While the intentions of restoration are good, the execution lacks accepted international standards, Dilwari said, adding that suggestions from conservators and professionals would have helped the cause. History enthusiast and member of Bombay Local History Society Aadil Desai said, "They should remove the world heritage status immediately. That's probably what they want to do, so they can go ahead with their plans to modify the area the way they want for commercial purposes. One must protest against this unprofessional approach and see to it that proper conservation work is done by the contractors." The on..

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Mizoram government will legislate a stringent prohibition law in the coming budget session of the assembly, its Excise and Narcotics Minister K Beichhua Monday said. The budget session of the state legislative assembly is likely to be held in March, he said at a meeting of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) here. Beichhua said that total prohibition would be reimposed in the state as promised by MNF in its assembly election manifesto. The MNF government helmed by Zoramthanga soon after taking over the reins of the state in December 2018 had declared 'dry days', but was challenged by liquor vendors and the Gauhati High Court stayed the long spell of dry days. It had declared dry days from December 21 to January 14 which was extended from January 15 to March 15, prompting the owners of three bonded warehouses and wine shops to approach the High Court and challenge its order on the long spell of dry days. The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court on January 19 squashed ...
