Fadnavis should not be 'scared' of Modi over height of Shivaji's statue

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Shiv Sena Monday asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to declare that the proposed statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji off the Mumbai coast will be the tallest in the world, and not be "scared" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah over the issue. The Sena said Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Maharashtra unit chief Jayant Patil has claimed the height of Shivaji's statue has been decreased to ensure that the 'Statue of Unity', dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, remains the tallest. It said Fadnavis should use the same courage that he displayed in announcing quota for the Maratha community, and not be "scared" of Prime Minister Modi and Shah over the issue of Shivaji statue's height.Decreasing the height of Shivaji's statue to make Sardar Patel's statue look taller is "narrow and distorted mindset", the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. MDMA drug makes you nicer, but not naive: study

Business / Business Standard/ General News
MDMA, the main ingredient in ecstasy, makes humans more likely to cooperate -- but only with trustworthy people -- researchers said Monday in the first study into how the drug impacts our willingness to help others. Despite its status in Britain as a Class A drug, MDMA is widely consumed due to the heightened sense of energy, empathy and pleasure it arouses in users. It contains neurotransmitters -- chemical messengers for the brain -- that are known to be linked to behaviour and mood, but scientists currently understand very little about how these affect social interactions. Researchers at King's College London studied 20 healthy adult men who were given a typical recreational dose of MDMA or a placebo pill and then asked to complete a set of tasks while images of their brain activity were taken with an MRI scanner. One of the mind exercises they were given was the Prisoner's Dilemma -- an example of so-called "game theory" in which an individual is asked to choose between .....

Sohrabuddin killed with dual motive of monetary and political gains, court told

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2005 with the "dual motive of political and monetary gains", the chief investigating officer (CIO) in the case told a special court here Monday. CIO Amitabh Thakur also told the court that he had not found any material evidence to show who the political beneficiaries were. Sheikh, a suspected gangster with terror links, was shot dead on November 26, 2005 while he was in custody of the Gujarat Police in an alleged fake encounter. His wife Kausar Bi was also allegedly killed in a similar manner within a few days. Sheikh's aide Tulsi Prajapati was allegedly killed in a staged encounter by the Gujarat and the Rajasthan Police in December 2006. "It is correct to say that as per the charge sheet filed in the case, there was a dual motive in the alleged encounter of Sohrabudin Sheikh. One was political and another was monetary," CIO Thakur told special court judge S J Sharma. "I have not found any material evidence to show the .....

Interim stay on order for admission to medical courses abroad

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The Madras High Court Monday stayed a single judge's order barring the MCI and the Centre from issuing eligibility certificate to students who secure less than 80 per cent marks in the qualifying examination to pursue medical courses in foreign countries. A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice N Seshasayee, hearing an appeal by the Board of Governors in supression of Medical Council of India, granted the interim stay and posted the matter to December 17 for next hearing. The bench also issued notices to the Centre, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council and the state government. The appeal challenged the September 28 order of Justice N Kirubakaran, contending that the single judge had increased the minimum qualification marks from 50 per cent to 80 per cent without any challenge to the stipulation. The judge had erroneously re-legislated the provisions of regulation on graduate medical education 1997, it submitted. Justice Kirubakaran had passed the order on a .....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The Tamil Nadu government Monday informed the Madras High Court that it did not have the power to block websites selling medicines in the absence of any act or regulation prohibiting such sales. Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana was hearing a batch of petitions in favour of and against online sale of medicines. Additional Advocate General S R Rajagopalan, in a counter affidavit, said the state "does not have powers to pull out websites providing online sale of medicines in the absence of any act or regulation prohibiting such sale." "This apart, the Centre has published the draft rule to regulate sale of drugs through e-pharmacy on August 28, seeking suggestions and objections from all the stakeholders," it added. This was under the central government's consideration, the additional advocate general said. "Therefore, unless there are any rules .....

Presidency hostel issue: minister says students' demand

Business / Business Standard/ General News
West Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee Monday said the demand by students of Presidency University for being accommodated in the Hindu Hostel, being repaired by the state PWD for over three years, at the earliest is just and cannot be ignored for long. A section of Presidency University students started a sit-in demonstration in the main building of the varsity from November 15 demanding immediate accommodation in the hostel. It has to be remembered that these students have been patiently waiting for the repair and renovation work to be over for three years, Chatterjee told reporters here. The minister confirmed that he received a report from the state PWD about the progress of renovation work of the Hindu Hostel. To a question, Chatterjee said the government will look into the reasons behind the delay in renovation work of the hostel and find out who is responsible - the PWD, the Presidency authorities or any agency previously hired by the institution to carry..

Air Quality drops, improvement likely on November 20

News / Mid-Day/ National
Air quality in Delhi and the adjoining areas worsened further to the "very poor" category on Monday. However, pollution is expected to decrease from Tuesday due to favourable winds and a "significant drop" in stubble burning in neighbouring states, officials said. Delhi is currently suffering largely due to pollution generated by local sources. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was 330 against 311 on Sunday, considered "very poor", while on Saturday it was 267 or "poor", on a scale of 0 to 500. The major pollutant PM2.5, or particles with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometres, also intensified over the day as easterly winds brought along moisture. "Air quality is 'very poor' and expected to drop -- but well within very poor category, with a gradual increase due to unfavourable winds," said a forecast by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). The Weather Department expects the situation to improve from Tuesday as Delhi is expected to receive dry north-westerly..
