The Dutch mystery: Don't know if Avdhut Shinde is dead or alive, says father

News / Mid-Day/ News
The 72-year-old father of Avdhut Shinde — who is absconding since his wife was found dead in the Netherlands in May — finally broke his silence in a conversation with mid-day. Madhukar Shinde, while claiming that he did not know where Avdhut was, said, "I don't even know whether he is alive or dead. He is not in touch with us anymore." During the investigation, the Dindoshi police found that Avdhut had called his father on a couple of occasions while he was on the run. There has been no trace of him thereafter though. "I have been harassed for no reason by the cops. They visit my place at odd hours and grill me to know of my son's whereabouts but I have no clue about it," said the father, adding that he often becomes emotionally weak when he looks at his grandchildren. "They have become orphans. Everything has been ruined," said Madhukar. "He used to call me from random numbers but now he has stopped calling after media reports revealed his whereabouts," Madhukar said ..

Lessons for life

News / Mid-Day/ News
When we were free-as-a-bird collegians, there was a trail that a friend and I had invented that we would set out on each time we wished to bunk a lecture, or simply "chill". Since our college was located in leafy, happy Matunga that was surrounded by Parsi Colony and Hindu Colony, the game involved having to look for interesting motifs or crests on building facades or the year in which it was established, and later, compare notes. We'd give each other an hour and head out in different directions before returning to the same spot where our hunt had begun. It ended up being an educational project that we had unwittingly created. For, not only did these trails offer tremendous insight into the colonies and its inhabitants, but it also led us to respect such structures that displayed elements from the Art Deco style of architecture as well as traces of vernacular designs. We also learnt about the Parsi and Maharashtrian communities, as they lent character to the two neighbourhoods. They we..

Dadar police stop Save Aarey protests at Shivaji Park

News / Mid-Day/ News
Tempers matched the soaring after-rain humidity on Sunday morning at Shivaji Park. The local police stopped a Save Aarey protest planned by local activists as there were "no permissions". The organisers had said this was to be a unique "sleeping protest" to save Aarey. This meant protesters would sleep along the circumference of the iconic Dadar space, making a statement to save Aarey's trees. A bunch of approximately 40 protestors had gathered near the Nana-Nani Park (aaji-aajoba udyan) at Shivaji Park. They came with banners and a few posters to shore up their sleep protest and to draw attention to the "unnecessary felling of more than 2,000 trees to make way for a Metro car shed inside Aarey". Their protest was scuttled even before it could take off. Police arrived at the scene, asking for "permissions" for the protest. None were available. The protest at Shivaji Park, which never took off 'It's the wrong place'Police inspector Kasar told the protesters, "You may say your cause is r..

Navi Mumbai: 45,000 residents in Vashi told to 'get out'

News / Mid-Day/ News
Residents of more than 750 buildings in Navi Mumbai have been slapped with eviction notices by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) after their buildings, which are just 30 years old, have been declared 'extremely dangerous'. The notices will impact lives of at least 45,000 people living in 9,000 flats in buildings constructed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The civic body has also threatened forcible eviction with police help if residents do not vacate the premises in time. "This building is declared extremely dangerous" notices greet you at almost every nook and corner of Vashi's sectors 9, 10 and 16. The CIDCO was formed about 50 years ago to build Navi Mumbai as a counter city to Mumbai, which was bursting at its seams. NMMC took over the reins of the civic administration in 1995. Residents who have spoken up against the unfair classification of the JN type buildings The NMMC general body in its initial meetings discussed the dilapidated building..

370 to decide the fate of 288 in Maha

News / Mid-Day/ News
The narrative for Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls has been defined much before political pundits join the dots after the people's verdict. Stakeholders shouldn't expect much of a discussion on daily issues, particularly from the ruling party, even as the opposition should be seen voicing their concerns in seeking a change in the Mantralaya's sixth floor office. What is the narrative? It's the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, which according to BJP's national president Amit Shah was PM Narendra Modi's historic fulfillment of a promise that the right-wing party had given several decades ago. Shah told party workers in Mumbai to reach each household with the party's achievement and a question as to why principal opponents — Congress and Nationalist Congress Party — have opposed the decision that a majority of the country's population has welcomed and appreciated. Smart move, indeed. The BJP, now enjoying an upper hand over the allies like Shiv Sena and ..
