Kapil Sibal: Rafale deal is not government-to-government deal

News / Mid-Day/ National
The Congress on Wednesday claimed the agreement to purchase the 36 French Rafale jets was not a government-to-government deal. Keeping up the attack over the Rafale "scam", Congress also said the French defence major was a "non-compliant" company and the Modi government should not have entered into a deal with it. "This is not a government-to-government deal, because no such procedure exists in France. France has never entered into a government-to-government defence deal. Moreover, it was not the French government which negotiated the deal with India. "It was a deal between the government of India on one side and Dassault Aviation, a private entity on the other. Since the French government was not involved in the negotiations, how can it be a government-to-government deal?" questioned Congress leader Kapil Sibal. Besides saying the deal was made in gross violations of the Defence Procurement Procedure(DPP), Sibal said Dassault Aviation was a non-compliant company and as such was not..

Poonam Dhillon now Mumbai BJP VP; wants to be hardcore worker

New Delhi: Veteran actress Poonam Dhillon joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004, but it is only now that she has taken on an active role as its Mumbai Vice President. Poonam, who took charge just before Diwali, says she wants to be a "hardcore worker" rather than a "decorative piece" like most actors in politics. "I joined the party in 2004. However, because of various commitments or responsibilities, I was supportive, but I was not ready to take on a very active role. It wasn't the right time as both my children were small... Now they are grown up and independent. I feel very strongly that the country needs dedicated people who have passion... rather than those who are in politics only for a career. I want to do my bit for my city and my country. That's why I volunteered; now I can do anything that is required as I have the time," Poonam told IANS over phone from Mumbai. Majority parents believe relationship with teachers is biggest factor in student development: Survey

Business / Business Standard/ General News
At least 90 per cent parents believe student-teacher relationship is the biggest factor that affects student motivation and development, according to a new survey. The survey in which 500 parents were interviewed over a period of six months pointed out parents believe that students grasp concepts fast in presence of a teacher. According to the survey by ed-tech start up Cuemath, 90 per cent parents give weightage to one-on-one interactions between students and teachers as an essential component of their children's education. "A major reason for the sustenance of this mode of thought, parents declared, was the knowledge that children naturally learn from one another while solving problems and working collaboratively within a shared space," the survey report said. It added that face-time with a teacher provide greater validation and encouragement than a pre-recorded video. The survey also revealed that the student-teacher relationship is considered amongst the biggest factors that .....

Delhi's air quality improves to 'very poor', may worsen

News / Mid-Day/ National
The air quality of the national capital and the regions around it, which on Wednesday improved to 'very poor' from 'severe' due to overnight rains, may again drop, warn monitoring agencies. Delhi saw about 7 mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, improving air quality by settling the particle pollutants. However, rains have also increased the moisture in the air, which according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), will trap the pollutants and worsen the air quality. "After the isolated shower in part of Delhi, a lot of moisture is introduced in the air, making it heavy and increased the holding capacity which will force AQI to go to the 'severe' category from evening until late night as the ventilation is also reduced," SAFAR forecast said. However, it adds that the air quality will recover in the next two days as the wind is likely to pick up by Friday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi at 4 p.m. on Wednesday was 312, considered 'very p..

Nehru became country's first PM on "compassionate grounds": BJP

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Slamming Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his remarks that India has a tea seller as its prime minister today because of the country's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, the BJP Wednesday retorted that rather Nehru became the PM on "compassionate grounds". Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only person who became the country's PM due to massive public support and majority whereas former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru could become the first PM of the country on compassionate grounds," BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said in a news conference. "And Indira Gandhi (became the PM) due to her syndicate, he added. Trivedi, however, did not elaborate further upon his observations. Speaking about Nehru on the eve of his birth anniversary (November 14), Tharoor had said Tuesday that it was because of the institutional structure created by Nehru that even a "chai wala" (tea seller) can become India's prime minister today.
