Office-of-profit row: Appointment of Shiv Sena leaders struck down

News / Mid-Day/ News
In a big setback to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the Maharashtra government has cancelled the appointment of Shiv Sena MLA Ravindra Waikar as chief coordinator in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) and that of party MP Arvind Sawant as head of State Parliamentary Coordination Committee. The action follows mid-day's report on February 20, 'Two Uddhav Thackeray appointees in the office-of-profit soup.' There is a buzz within the Sena and Mantralaya corridors, that to avoid embarrassment for the ruling saffron party, the two Sena leaders were asked to furnish a letter claiming they do not want to take up the assignment. Arvind Sawant and Ravindra Waikar  In early February, Thackeray Sr had cleared the appointment of Waikar and Sawant for two key positions. On February 20, mid-day reported that the appointment cleared by the chief minister is likely to trigger an office-of-profit controversy. A chief minister usually appoints people from his/her own party (MPs or MLAs) to help with..

"There was an unusually huge deployment of police force. By Sunday noon, the number of protesters rose to over 6,000. All of them were peacefully sitting there... without causing any disturbance," said one of them. He added that around 3 pm, close to 400 right-wing supporters had gathered near a temple between Jaffrabad and Maujpur Metro stations and we saw them talking to the police. "..

Mumbai: 10 months on, incomplete FOB dogs commuters at Kurla

News / Mid-Day/ News
A partially-shut foot overbridge (FOB) with a pending 10-12 metres of work at Kurla station has become a major cause of inconvenience for passengers during peak hours. The incomplete work has not only isolated the Harbour line but with no signage below, it is only after the commuters climb up, they realise the bridge being shut, making them take a detour to reach platform 7 and 8. The FOB was initially closed without any prior notice on April 2, 2019, disconnecting it from the Harbour line which prompted the then General Manager DK Sharma to personally intervene and directing the officials to put appropriate signage and also asking ticket checkers to guide passengers. But with almost a year passing by and with no signs of the work being completed, the commuter organisation has blasted the railways saying that they should call in the Army if Central Railway (CR) is helpless to complete the remaining work. While Mumbai's Divisional Railway Manager Shalabh Goel and General Manager Sunil M..

What does it mean to be a gangster's daughter? Alleged owner of a fake identity, the 23-year-old daughter of underworld gangster Ejaz Lakdawala, Shifa Advani, was accused of trying to flee to Nepal with her one-year-old kid on a passport allegedly made with fake papers. She was also charged with extortion dating back to 2005, when she was eight. After spending over a month-and-a-half in prison, Shifa speaks to mid-day about how she came to know of her father's life of crime, the identity — deemed fake by Mumbai police — he gave her, and how she is being made to pay for Lakdawala's crimes. What is your real name, Sonia Advani or Shifa Advani? My parents named me Sonia Advani to protect me. After marrying Shahid Shaikh, I changed my name to Shifa. I have all the papers. I didn't forge any documents. I am a law-abiding citizen. How do you perceive the clean chit in the extortion case? Mystique that lives on still

News / Mid-Day/ News
Ask Mummy' was her nickname among the film press, primarily because that would be her answer to most questions directed at her during interviews. Mildly ironic that 'Mai' (for mother) became her popular sobriquet in the film industry that she practically ruled as the first (and perhaps the only proper) 'pan-Indian star', with 300 films, in five languages, over 50 years! It's only befitting that the national movie hero's epithet went to a self-learnt song-and-dance sensation. For that's what has traditionally united India through its cinema culture — regardless of the region. Just her résumé would be hard to fit into text, having worked "six shifts a day" for years on end. How does one even sit down to write about such a prolific career, let alone build a believable portrait, given the mystique around the painfully elusive Sridevi — who continued to confound fans, with mysteries surrounding her sudden death as well? Writer Satyarth Nayak has indeed attempted a..
