Delhi's air quality improves to 'very poor', may worsen

News / Mid-Day/ National
The air quality of the national capital and the regions around it, which on Wednesday improved to 'very poor' from 'severe' due to overnight rains, may again drop, warn monitoring agencies. Delhi saw about 7 mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, improving air quality by settling the particle pollutants. However, rains have also increased the moisture in the air, which according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), will trap the pollutants and worsen the air quality. "After the isolated shower in part of Delhi, a lot of moisture is introduced in the air, making it heavy and increased the holding capacity which will force AQI to go to the 'severe' category from evening until late night as the ventilation is also reduced," SAFAR forecast said. However, it adds that the air quality will recover in the next two days as the wind is likely to pick up by Friday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi at 4 p.m. on Wednesday was 312, considered 'very p..

Nehru became country's first PM on "compassionate grounds": BJP

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Slamming Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his remarks that India has a tea seller as its prime minister today because of the country's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, the BJP Wednesday retorted that rather Nehru became the PM on "compassionate grounds". Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only person who became the country's PM due to massive public support and majority whereas former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru could become the first PM of the country on compassionate grounds," BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said in a news conference. "And Indira Gandhi (became the PM) due to her syndicate, he added. Trivedi, however, did not elaborate further upon his observations. Speaking about Nehru on the eve of his birth anniversary (November 14), Tharoor had said Tuesday that it was because of the institutional structure created by Nehru that even a "chai wala" (tea seller) can become India's prime minister today. "If today we have a chai wala as prime minister, it is because .....

The Supreme Court Wednesday declined to stay its verdict which allowed entry of women of all age groups into Kerala's Sabarimala Temple. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked a lawyer, who was seeking a stay on its Sabarimala verdict, to wait till January 22 when the Constitution bench will hear review petitions. The matter was mentioned by lawyer Mathews J Nedumpara, who has filed the review on behalf of the National Ayyappa Devotees (Women's) Association. On September 28, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by the then Chief Justice Dipak Misra, in 4:1 verdict had paved the way for the entry of women of all ages into the Sabarimala Temple, saying the ban amounted to gender discrimination. The apex court had on Tuesday agreed to hear on January 22 in open court the pleas seeking review of its verdict but refused to stay its judgement. The review petitions against the verdict were taken up 'in-chamber' by a bench comprising the CJI and Justices R F N..

Did railway minister Piyush Goyal dedicate incomplete works to people?

It appears that Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has dedicated some works on the Central Railway to commuters that are yet to be completed. On Sunday, Goyal had dedicated the new platform at Parel station, a footover bridge, etc, along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and a host of other ministers and officials, when they flagged off a new suburban corridor and trains. A ground check by mid-day on Tuesday however, found that key passenger amenities on the new Parel platform, like an escalator and elevator are yet to be completed. Another project that was mentioned in the list of utilities in use in the dedication to the public on Sunday, was the Parel footover bridge, which also remains incomplete in a way, because one of its landings and pathways in the west side of Prabhadevi station are yet to be completed and opened. "The Parel platform was thrown open to the public long ago. Will it again be dedicated in the name of Parel Terminus once the work is complete in the future?..
