Jaitley counters Manmohan Singh's criticism

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Hours after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rejected the ruling government's claim of doubling farmers' income by 2022, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said the former need not be "pessimistic"."Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh need not be pessimistic about doubling rural incomes. If he compared the investment that the NDA government is making in the agriculture, rural and social sectors he will get the answer," he tweeted.During the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Sunday, the former prime minister had criticised the Centre for its "culture of constant self-praise and jumlas" as against any solid policy framework. He had also raised questions over the Centre's promise of doubling farmers' income by 2022, and said the Modi government's claim would require an agricultural growth rate of 14 per cent "which is nowhere in sight."On a related note, the Union Cabinet on July 4 had approved the proposal made by Jaitley in this year's Union Budget for hiking the support price of Kharif..

Sharif damaging credibility of July 25 general elections: Imran

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan today accused jailed prime minister Nawaz Sharif of "protecting India's interests" and trying to damage the credibility of the July 25 general elections. Addressing a poll rally in Karachi, the 65-year-old cricketer-turned-politician claimed that a "big game" is being played to hurt the credibility of the general elections and Sharif and others are behind this "conspiracy". "Now when he knows that his party is facing certain defeat in the elections, he is saying the elections are going to be rigged, Khan said. Even the Indian media is now beating out the narrative that the elections will be rigged. It is a big conspiracy against the state of Pakistan, he added. Khan alleged that Sharif, who is now serving 10-years jail term in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in a corruption case, had always tried to defame the Pakistan armed forces and institutions. "He tried to do this through the Dawn leaks and then by claiming that the Pakistani establishment ...

EU finance chief blasts Trump over 'inappropriate' trade sanctions

Business / Business Standard/ General News
EU finance chief Pierre Moscovici fired a barb at US President Donald Trump today as he called on both sides of an ongoing global trade dispute to "act as allies." The US and EU have been at loggerheads since Trump angered European allies by announcing tariffs on steel and aluminum as he launched trade restrictions targeting China in particular. Referring to Trump branding the EU, alongside China and Russia, as trade "foes," Moscovici said the EU is "willing to build bridges." "What I stressed several times in my meetings here is that the EU is certainly not the author of major trade imbalances," Moscovici told reporters during the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin yesterday spoke at the conference about wanting to "balance" the country's trade relationships with China and the EU, calling on both to respect "free, fair and reciprocal trade." But Moscovici said that "we believe that targeting us is certainly inappropriate... and that we must act ...

Iran 'mother of all peace,' 'all wars,' leader warns Trump

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Iran's president Hassan Rouhani has urged US President Donald Trump to "make peace" with Iran, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported today. The report quotes Rouhani as saying "American must understand well that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace and war with Iran is the mother of all wars." Rouhani warned Trump to stop "playing with the lion's tail" and threatening Iran, "or else you will regret it." Trump earlier this year pulled the United States out of the international deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased American sanctions. Trump has suggested Iranian leaders are "going to call me and say 'let's make a deal'" but Iran has rejected talks. Rouhani has previously lashed out against Trump for threatening to re-impose the sanctions, as well as for moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and banning travel to the U.S. from certain Muslim-majority countries...

G20 warns 'heightened trade and geopolitical tensions' pose risks to growth

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Group of 20 finance ministers warned today that "heightened trade and geopolitical tensions" posed risks to global economic growth as two days of meetings came to a close. The G20 emphasised "the need to step up dialogue and actions to mitigate risks and enhance confidence", in its final communique after a summit dominated by fears over an escalating global trade conflict. The statement did not mention the United States, which is at the centre of multiple trade disputes, but was still stronger than the statement in March when the G20 avoided the issue altogether. G20 ministers described current global economic growth as "robust" in the communique but cautioned that "short and medium term" risks "have increased". As well as trade tensions, the communique identified "rising financial vulnerabilities", "global imbalances" and "inequality" amongst the risks. The ministers and central bank chiefs met against a backdrop of the United States trading punitive tariff sanctions with the .....

EU says trade differences remain despite G-20 talks

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Differences remain over trade and the tensions could escalate further despite talks by the world's top financial officials taking place in Argentina's capital amid fears that a wave of tariffs could damper global economic growth, a European official said today. The meeting of G-20 finance ministers and central bankers in Buenos Aires comes with the United States and China in a full-blown trade war with both nations imposing tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods with even bigger tariffs being threatened. "These meetings have been taking place in an international context which is very challenging," European financial affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici told reporters today. "Trade tensions remain high and they threaten to escalate further." But Moscovici said the two-day summit that began Saturday has not been "tense," and that countries must remain "cool-headed and maintain a proper sense of perspective." Representing the US at the meetings is Treasury Secretary Steven..

Tesla's Musk resolves farting unicorn row with US potter

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Elon Musk has reached an agreement with a US potter who accused him of using his farting unicorn design on Tesla products without permission. Tom Edwards, of Evergreen, Colorado, wrote on his website on Friday that the issue had been resolved "in a way that everyone feels good about!" while Musk tweeted a screenshot of the same statement. The story began last year after the billionaire founder of the electric car firm and SpaceX tweeted a picture of Edwards' colorful mug, which depicts a crudely drawn unicorn against a rainbow, with smiley-face emojis in the background. The mythical creature is seen passing wind into a funnel that is connected to a car. "Electric cars are good for the environment because electricity comes from magic," reads the back. Musk called it "maybe my favorite mug ever" and the publicity led to a slight bump in sales for Edwards, who was happy that the South African-born entrepreneur, often hailed as a leading tech innovator and visionary, was a fan of his .....
