GST Council doubles tax on caffeinated beverages, slashes on hotel tariffs

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The all-powerful GST Council on Friday more than doubled the tax on caffeinated beverages but slashed the same on hotel tariffs and some goods with a view to addressing sectoral concerns in a slowing economy. The tax changes came on a day the government announced big bang reduction in corporate tax rates to boost private investments and pull the economy out of a six-year low growth and a 45-year high unemployment rate. The GST Council, headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and having representatives of all states, however, did not take a decision on cutting tax on automobiles as well as items like biscuits which had seen fall in sales on slowing consumption and demand. Briefing reporters after the 37th meeting of the GST Council, Sitharaman said caffeinated beverages will be charged with 28 per cent tax plus a 12 per cent compensation cess in place of the current tax rate of 18 per cent. This will bring them at par with the tax rate charged on aerated drinks. Also, .....

Nitish Kumar's jibes leave Tejashwi Yadav fuming

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's oblique reference to his political detractors who "know nothing, are ignorant of even a, b, c of politics but still get lots of publicity" on Friday touched a raw nerve with RJD heir apparent Tejashwi Yadav. While addressing the state council meeting of the JD (U) headed by him, Kumar hit out at opponents who kept making personal attacks on him to gain publicity while refraining from mentioning any party or leader by name. However, the 29-year-old younger son of Lalu Prasad took the bait and came out with a flurry of tweets accusing the chief minister of having made "unseemly remarks" against the leader of the Opposition. "The Chief Minister says I do not know anything. Okay uncle, but then why did you make me the Deputy CM? Why did you grow restless when I handled (well) the portfolios that were allotted to me? If you feel gratified in making unseemly remarks against the leader of the Opposition then, please, continue doing so on a ....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Friday alleged that "some powerful people" wanted to destroy him, adding that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was working with "impatience" in a sting case.He alleged that the central government through its agencies are trying to "pressurise" people."Justiciary is autonomous, will punish the guilty, protect the innocent, but why the power looks to be putting pressure on everyone. Am I a threat to the security of the country? Am I a threat to law and order? Am I running away from the country?" he asked. He further wrote on Twitter: "I accept every sentence, but through the judicial process, my right to get justice should be protected, some powerful people want to crush me."Earlier today, the CBI submitted a report in a sealed cover to Nainital High Court in connection with sting case. Only Pulwama-like incident can change mood in Maharashtra:

Business / Business Standard/ General News
There is a lot of resentment against the BJP-led government in Maharashtra, and only a Pulwama-like incident can change this sentiment ahead of the elections, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Friday. Pawar was addressing a press conference here after attending a party workers' meet. "There was anger against the Narendra Modi government before 2019 Lok Sabha polls. But Pulwama attack changed the entire situation," Pawar said. Forty paramilitary personnel were killed in the Pulwama terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in February this year, prompting the Indian government to launch airstrikes against a terror base at Balakot inside Pakistan's territory. The airstrikes are considered to have boosted the Modi government's popularity. Pawar said he was seeing anger about the state government before the next month's assembly polls. "Only another Pulwama attack-like situation can change people's mind," the former defence minister said. "We are trying to bring secular forces together ...

TMC sticks to its stand on guv, says those who vandalised JU

Business / Business Standard/ General News
The Trinamool Congress on Friday stuck to its stand that West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar's visit to the Jadavpur University campus during the agitation there on Thursday was unfortunate and the chancellor must give justice to the vice-chancellor, professors and students who were assaulted. The governor is also the chancellor of the Jadavpur University where Union minister Babul Supriyo was on Thursday shown black flags and heckled by a section of students, prompting Dhankhar to rush to the institute. TMC secretary general and Education Minister Partha Chatterjee maintained that the administration played a very peaceful role to resolve the problem amicably. "On behalf of the Trinamool Congress, we stand by what we had said yesterday regarding the Jadavpur University episode. We always respect the post of the governor because it is a Constitutional post," he said in a statement. "We expect that the governor will give justice to vice-chancellor, professors and .....
