A quantum of emotional misery

Birju Kishore Salla thought it was kinda funny to pin a terrorist threat in Google-translated Urdu in the toilet of Jet Airways flight 9W 339 on October 30, 2017. Salla is one of those rich brats who never grow up and are not interested in the family business, in this case jewellery. A year earlier, he had allegedly smuggled a cockroach into a Jet Airways flight and then complained that he'd found it in his business class meal. But Salla was sentenced to life imprisonment a few days ago, under a tough anti-hijacking law passed in 2016. He was also fined 50 million rupees, which a special court ruled would be paid out as compensation to the crew and passengers who had been put through the ordeal. Each pilot would get a lakh rupees, cabin crew 50,000 rupees each, and each passenger 25,000 rupees for the "misery" inflicted. The 2016 law expands the definition of 'hijacking' to include threats. If the threat is accompanied by an actual attempt to hijack a plane, the law guarantees the deat..

After 13 deaths, Bandra's fatal U-bridge to be walled for safety

News / Mid-Day/ National
The U-bridge that connects Bandra East to West has been claiming more than three to four lives every year since 2015. As per the traffic department's statistics — accessed by mid-day — in four years, 14 lives have been lost on the stretch, while another 25 have been critically injured at this deadly turn. This year alone, three people died on the same spot. Fortunately, there were no casualties on the stretch in 2018, but from 2015 to 2017, 11 people were killed on the deadly bridge. The Bandra Police claimed that they have written several letters to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and tried to draw their attention towards the rising casualties, but they've received no response. The only time MSRDC took a few steps to rectify the problem was in 2016. But nothing much has been done since, even as deadly incidents continue to rise on the bridge. The Dutch mystery: Missing Mumbai man spied on, and hit, his wife

News / Mid-Day/ News
While Avdhut Shinde is still missing after the mysterious death of his wife Sharmila, grim details have emerged about the trouble in their marriage. Sharmila was supposedly planning on divorcing Avdhut because of his overly suspicious, possessive and abusive behaviour. She had also filed a non-cognisable complaint against him on January 31, a month after he had left her with bruises during a heated argument. Sharmila's decomposed body was found in the apartment she resided in with Avdhut and their children in the Netherlands on May 21. Close to four months before that, she had registered a NC complaint against him at the Kondhwa police station in Pune, a senior officer from the Pune police told mid-day. The complaint was filed close to a month after the couple had a heated argument that ended with Sharmila suffering bruises on her face. Some chats between Sharmila and a friend where they spoke about booking tickets for her return to Mumbai Heated arguments Speaking about the way Avdhut..

Class in Hasyasana Shilpa Shetty Kundra's love for yoga rubs off on to press photographers at a media interaction ahead of International Yoga Day at her Juhu residence. Pic/Satej Shinde Banter over chai In February this year, this page had carried a report on Chai ki Dukaan, a social media initiative by two friends from India and Pakistan, which offers a platform to young people from both the countries to share their tales of friendship. For the Indo-Pak World Cup cricket match on Sunday — which off the field, was played out as the mother of all rivalries perhaps more than ever before in the recent past — we came across banter between the founders. Rudrani Dasgupta (in pic, right) from Kolkata reminisced about how she had grown up seeing the immense popularity Imran Khan and Wasim Akram enjoyed in India. And Karachi's Ramsha Baluch (in pic, left) spoke of Virat Kohli being the current favourite in Pakistan."He has inspired quite a few hair and beard styles. You can see his..
