There is a proposal to outsource commercial and onboard services of a few trains, but no large-scale privatisation plans are underway, the Railway Ministry informed Parliament on Friday. In reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha, the ministry said that while private players will be allowed to run trains, the responsibility of its safety lay with the railways. Railway subsidiary IRCTC, its tourism and catering arm, has already started running railways' first "private" train, Tejas Express from Lucknow to Delhi. "There is no plan for large scale privatisation of railway routes. There is a proposal to outsource the commercial and onboard services of a few trains and also to permit private players to induct modern rakes to run trains on select routes with an objective to provide improved service delivery to passengers. Twenty-one students set off on a month-long cyclothon from Jammu to Kanyakumari for the cause of girls' education. The 3,700-km cyclothon has been organised by P N Doshi Women's College in Mumbai in collaboration with Jammu University's Directorate of Sports and Physical Education. About 350 tourists and locals, stranded at the Zojila pass due to heavy snowfall, have been rescued by army personnel, officials said on Friday. Visitors to the area got stuck as regions around the pass like Sonamarg, Baltal and Nilgrar received heavy snowfall since Thursday which also led to traffic jams at many places, they said. "About 300-350 people, including women and children, were stranded at heights above 11,000 feet where temperature hovers around minus 7 degrees. A number of trucks and other vehicles got stuck in traffick jams." "In coordination with the civil administration, army rescue columns moved in vehicles promptly to rescue the stranded civilians from the Zojila Pass," a senior army official said. The army personnel also provided medical assistance, hot food and blankets to the affected people. Businessman Ratul Puri, nephew of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, told a Delhi court Friday that he was not going to run away if granted bail in a money laundering case related to the VVIP chopper scam. Puri sought bail from the court saying he was not an accused in the predicate offence, lodged by the CBI based on which the Enforcement Directorate lodged the present case. Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Puri, told Special Judge Arvind Kumar that he was not a director or a shareholder, directly or indirectly, of the nine companies where the money has gone according to the ED complaint. "I (Puri) have not received the proceeds of crime, I cannot be tried in this case at all," the counsel told the court. The government on Friday raised concerns over fake invoices being generated in the business-to-business (B2B) segment which is impacting GST collections. This under-reporting has become a challenge for the government, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Thakur said. "It is not only the government, it is also the industry which also has to play an important role. In GST, we are seeing a lot of fake invoicing and it is from business to business," Thakur said at the annual session of Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association. A civic-run bus firm in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh has lodged a police complaint after a 30-second porn clip was played on the screen of one of its ticket vending machines at a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) stand, an official said on Friday. While the incident happened on October 28, a video of it went viral on social media a couple of days ago after which bus firm Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL) filed a complaint with the Madhya Pradesh police's Cyber Cell, an official said. BCLL, an undertaking of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), operates the state capital's BRTS corridors. BJP member Prabhat Jha on Friday brought a private member's constitutional amendment bill in Rajya Sabha to make cleanliness and sanitation a fundamental duty. However, discussion on the bill remained inconclusive as Urban Development Minister Hardeep Puri would reply next week. No member expressed reservation against or opposed the bill. Moving the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2017 (amendment of article 51A), which deals with fundamental duties of citizens, Jha said there was a need to expand cleanliness drive in the country.
