Paytm founder reveals road to profitability; may take 2 yrs to come out of red

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Digitial payment giant Paytm expects to turn profitable after two years as it is monetising the existing customer base and eyes financial services as its next major frontier for growth, its founder CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said. Noida-based firm, which had an astonishing rise after infamous demonetisation in 2016, is betting on financial services, commerce and payments as three key focus areas. In an interview with PTI, Sharma said Paytm's growth is divided into three phases - first three years of finding the right product-market fit; the next was revenue and monetisation; and the last phase will be about profitability and free cash flows. "We are in the second phase of that journey," he said. In 2015, Paytm started deploying QR codes and by 2018-19 completed its product-market fit. From 2019-20 onwards, it is monetising. "I would say at least 2 years because we are also a large dominant market share company and we wouldn't want to lose market share while becoming profitable next .....

After registering a thumping victory in the Delhi elections, the Aam Aadmi Party is eying the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls scheduled in 2022 and said that it will seek votes in the name of Delhi's development model. AAP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh claimed that the BJP's "Gujarat model" was nothing compared to his party's Delhi development model. He said workers will reach out to the people in UP and tell them about party's development agenda and schemes. "We have started making ground in politically sensitive Uttar Pradesh. We are sure that the 2022 election will be contested on development agenda, and we will seek vote in the name of Delhi's development model," Singh told PTI. "The Delhi elections has proved that people are discarding politics of hatred and preferring politics of development. In the Delhi polls, 15 MLAs belong to UP and they will be given responsibility in the state to strengthen party base," he added. The AAP leader said the party will soon .....

Business / Business Standard/ General News
Jyotika Dutta of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, on Sunday won the epee gold in the fencing competition of the inaugural Khelo India University Games here. The 22-year-old diminutive epee specialist underlined her growing stature in the sport as she beat Linthoi Haobam of Manipur University in the final. Just back from a highly productive stint in France, at the International Fencing Federation's High Performance Centre, Jyotika used that experience to bail herself out of a tricky start. "Adversity teaches you a lot. I had some rough starts but was determined not to make the same mistakes in the knockouts," she said, brushing aside her two defeats in the group stage. Up against an opponent at least six inches taller than her in Yashkeerat Hayer, Jyotika raced to a five-point lead and completed an emphatic 15-5 win. But the final was a much tougher proposition, with Manipur's Linthoi matching her point by point. Yet, Jyotika, from Himachal Pradesh, prevailed 15-14 in a tense .....

Ahead of the budget session of Maharashtra Assembly, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a closed door meeting with NCP president Sharad Pawar and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar at his official residence here on Sunday. The leaders arrived at a consensus on communicating to the Centre about "objectionable parts" of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), a senior state leader said. This comes against the backdrop of Thackeray's recent statement that he had no problems with the NPR and nobody should be afraid over the CAA. The Sena's stand appeared at variance with that of the NCP and the Congress, which are its alliance partners in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government. The meeting, held at the CM's official residence 'Varsha' on Sunday, focused on two issues - implementation of the CAA, NPR and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, and the budget session beginning on .....
