All 57 correctional homes in Bengal to have in-house radio

In a bid to ensure that jail inmates have better living conditions, the state government has decided to launch in-house radio stations in all 57 correctional homes. According to Correctional Home department sources, the decision has been taken after the success of a pilot project at the Dum Dum Central Correctional Home recently. "The project has been a huge success at Dum Dum Central Jail. So it was decided that the project would be extended to other prisons of the state in a phased manner," State Correctional Home minister Ujjwal Biswas said. While elaborating about the project, Biswas said, the jail department with the help of an NGO is training inmates to work as radio jockeys. A room has been provided inside the jail premises with musical equipment. The radio jockeys would play the songs through loudspeakers placed outside cells of prisoners and their working area, Biswas said. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered suspension of the managing director of Handicrafts (Sales & Exports) Corporation, Jasvinder Singh Dua, who was booked by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) last year, officials said on Friday. Masrat-ul-Islam, the director of handicrafts, Jammu and Kashmir, will hold the charge of the post of managing director of Handicrafts (Sales & Exports)Corporation in addition to his own duties till further orders, they said quoting an order by the General Administration Department. "Pending enquiry, Jasvinder Singh Dua is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect, in terms of Rule 31 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1956," the order read, adding that during the period of his suspension, Dua would remain attached with the office of divisional commissioner, Jammu. Liquor traders in Goa on Friday asked the state government to stop issuing any more licences for retail sale of alcohol as the industry has reached "saturation point". All Goa Liquor Traders Association president Dattaprasad Naik also said if the proposed hike in excise duty on alcohol mooted in the recent state budget is not withdrawn, the entire industry would collapse. The budget 2020-21, presented in the assembly on February 6, proposed a hike in the excise duty on various liquor brands, including local brew 'Feni'. Talking to PTI, Naik said 2,000 retail liquor outlets already exist for a population of 15 lakh which is sufficient to meet the requirements in Goa. "There is no space for more outlets in the state. The Nagaland Lokayukta has ordered a preliminary inquiry to be conducted by the chief minister into allegations that Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton was involved in the appointment of over 1,100 constables in the police department in violation of norms. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has been asked to submit his report in the form of an affidavit before the next date of hearing. The order was signed by the Lokayukta of Nagaland Justice Uma Nath Singh on Thursday while taking cognizance of a complaint filed by Vicca S Aye. Aye had lodged the complaint against Patton, who is in-charge of the home department, on Wednesday. The Lokayukta in the order directed the Coordinating Officer/Inspector under Nagaland Lokayukta Police Establishment to register a case of preliminary inquiry to be conducted by a higher authority, that is the chief minister. A three-member committee has been set up to enquire into the alleged leakage of question paper Class 11 final examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), officials said on Friday. The committee will be headed by the Director of Education (Schools) and will have additional director Education (Schools) and the deputy secretary in the Education department as the other two-members, a statement issued by the Education department said. The committee will find out the facts and circumstances leading to the leakage of the question papers. It will also probe whether there was any procedural lapses on the part of the COHSEM or any individual was involved in the question paper leak, the statement said. It will also suggest preventive measures to avoid such lapses in the near future. State-owned CIL's coal supply to the power sector registered a decline of 6.8 per cent to 377.86 million tonnes (MT) in the the April-January period of the ongoing fiscal. The commodity despatch by Coal India (CIL) to the power sector in the year-ago period was 405.61 MT, according to official data. However, the coal despatch by CIL to the power sector in January registered an increase of 2.9 per cent to 43.20 MT, over 42 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, it said. The supply of dry-fuel by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a state-owned coal miner, in the April-January period also registered a decline of 2.6 per cent to 44.03 MT, over 45.22 MT in the year-ago period. Stating rain as the 'enemy of the coal sector', a government official had earlier blamed extended monsoon for the loss of coal output for a few months (from July) in the current fiscal. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday allowed the Bhim Army to hold a meeting of its workers at Reshimbagh Ground here on February 22, but imposed certain conditions. A division bench of Justices Sunil Shukre and Madhav Jamdar said the petition of the Dalit outfit, seeking permission for the conclave, is allowed with conditions. Election for all the 50 Zilla Panchayat (ZP) constituencies in Goa will be held on March 22, it was announced here on Friday. The State Election Commission (SEC) announced the poll schedule for Zilla Panchayats (ZPs) in Goa, which has two districts. State Election Commissioner R K Srivastava, addressing a press conference, said voting for both ZP bodies North Goa and South Goa will be held on March 22 and the counting will take place the next day.
